Meet Nancy Christy-Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Christy-Moore.

Hi Nancy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Educated in commercial art at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and later at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, I never pursued a career in commercial art. Instead, I married, had a daughter, and didn’t return to my art until my late 30’s when I realized all I really wanted to do was paint and teach what I loved about painting!

I started as a watercolor artist after discovering I was allergic to oil pigments. After attending several workshops with world-class water media painters, I moved on to the world of abstract art using mixed water media such as acrylics and enamels and rice paper collage. During this time, I exhibited my work in galleries in the southern California area where I lived. In Laguna Beach with my watercolors and mixed media. Then when my husband and I moved to Kansas, I continued teaching and my art was shown in several high-end galleries in the Kansas City area as well as two in Louisville and Lexington, KY where my horse series got off to a roaring start. When we moved to Arizona, the horse series was featured at several galleries around the state and also in Florida and Connecticut. I quickly became known regionally and nationally for my unique horse series paintings.

I have had over 20 solo exhibits, with two in Japan, and have received many honors and awards over the past 41 years of my painting career. I am currently represented by the Raku Gallery in Jerome and Ground Floor Artists in Surprise.

My intuitive style has evolved over the years and today, my paintings happen when I create chaos on the canvas and bring it to order. I call it “inner painting” and have taught numerous workshops on that process. Today I use extensive texturing of the canvas prior to pouring the pigments over the canvas or panel. I enjoy using strong colors combined with energetic movement as I express my emotional attachments to the story I find revealed in each painting as I bring it to completion. Often I feel the paintings coming through me, not from me as though I were a conduit of a higher power.

Being selected as a featured artist by the internationally known Australian group “Put Some Colour In Your Life” in 2017 put me and my art process on an international stage! My 24-minute long film is featured in Season 5, Episode 16. I have also produced 31 free short teaching videos on YouTube: www.youtube.com/nancychristymoore. In addition, you can order my full-length DVD “Nancy Christy-Moore Painting Together Again” through Kunaki or download it from my website: www.nchristy.com (on the About Nancy page).

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My path has been filled with ups and downs, but for the most part my life partner and husband, Jack Moore smoothed the way and encouraged me to never give up. Sadly he was taken by cancer almost three years ago and I sorely miss his special encouragement and assistance with life itself.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently and have been for the past 41 years teaching private workshops offered through various art venues and also at my Surprise Studio. I specialize in bringing students new techniques for their artistic journey as well as the encouragement of their individual talents. Many organizations in the Valley of the Sun have sought my time to give demonstrations to their groups and I enjoy offering a variety of programs suited to their needs.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
As I stated earlier, my husband, Jack Moore was my hero! He took care of all the carrying of artwork, encouraging my spirit when things were slow, and in general being there for me as an artist and a person. There is no one to replace him in that role.
