Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Fox Thomas.
Mallory, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been in the health and fitness industry for 15 years! As an Arizona native, I swam competitively from age 5 – age 18. Naturally, working at a gym was a great “transition” job as I put myself through school. Little did I know that I would make a career as a movement specialist and start my own business eight years later! I founded Foxy FIT while in grad school. I loved working with clients (to date I have worked over 30,000 one-on-one with clients). Working for myself allowed me the flexibility to give my clients exactly what they needed. This resulted in pursuing a lot of continuing education certifications and teaching other health/fitness professionals part time for the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and the Stretch to Win Center for Fascial Stretch Therapy.
I sustained a traumatic brain injury in 2018 and had to take a great deal of time off to recover. At that time, I was able to keep my business afloat for the three months I was away and returned to work part time in December 2018. I am currently rebuilding my business and rebranding my specialty. Due to my training, education and expertise, I often worked with clients suffering from multiple medical conditions, chronic pain, and disability. My medical journey has reignited my passion for assisting these warriors in returning to their full health and movement abilities.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a small business is never easy, and making my mark as a female professional in a male-dominated industry has also been a challenge. However, maintaining my small business, while I gave my full-time and attention to my health, has been my greatest challenge. I am happy to share that the difficulties I faced while recovering have allowed me to foster resilience and come back stronger (and more balanced) than ever.
Please tell us about your business.
At Foxy FIT we specialize in human movement. I am currently the sole practitioner and work mostly one-on-one with clients. I do work with groups/teams when their fitness goals are aligned. I am known for my expertise and education. I hold a doctorate in health sciences and a master’s in human movement science. I maintain several certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, including their Master Trainer designation, and advanced specializations in corrective exercise and performance enhancement. I’m also a 1200-hour Certified Baptiste Yoga Teacher, hold a Mindfulness Certificate from Arizona State University, and am a Level-3 Fitness Certified Fascial Stretch Specialist.
I specialize in teaching my clients tools to help them achieve and maintain their health throughout their lives. I love to create personalized plans that my clients feel confident in executing. This means that every single session I conduct is different!
What a new client can expect from booking a consultation with me, is filling out a detailed health history and goals online before our first session. I make sure that each person is aware of all of the details they need to know to feel comfortable, and that I have everything I need to take excellent care of him or her. At the session, we will chat about the paperwork. I ask any clarifying questions I have and allow the client to ask any questions that may have come up.
Then, we do a series of subjective and objective assessments, based on their goals. Finally, we full a full treatment session. This may include the Graston Technique (instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization), fascial stretch, yoga, mindfulness, corrective exercise, or any other tool that will best help the person in front of me.
We conclude the session by going over homework: I film videos to ensure my client can do the exercises/techniques without me, as I aim to educate and inspire people to do more on their own.
Lastly, we will go over my recommendations. If when a client decides to continue with me for a time, I will set up their online program via my app, and set a schedule/treatment timeframe.
I am proud of my dedication to each person’s success. Whether its the MLB umpires, or a 95-year-old grandmother, I teach each person’s needs and program to heart. I truly care about each person and am determined to help them thrive. I feel that this sets my practice apart from others.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Traveling to Mexico as a five-year-old to “help” build houses with a nonprofit. My dad is a contractor, so we had the opportunity to join him on this trip. This experience ignited a passion for travel and service to others.
