Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Daniel.
Jeremy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Since I was a kid, I had a passion for music. I grew up with two older brothers and an older sister, so I was exposed to all different types of music as a child. In the early 90’s I fell in love with alternative music and more specifically, “grunge” bands. After high school I began experimenting with computer recording software and electronic music. That led me to writing, recording and producing my own music. Although it was very raw, poorly executed and by no means any good, I realized that making music is all I wanted to do. I was fortunate enough to have some great friends that would introduce me to other great genres of music. And I was very lucky to have a couple friends that would make songs with me. Finally after years of recording as a hobby, in 2006 I decided to attend the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe and Gilbert. It was a great experience and it lead me on some amazing journeys. Right out of school, I worked as a live sound Engineer at “The Real Bar” in Tempe. Then later freelanced at various live venues and home studios around town. In the summer of 2010, alongside Ricardo Lozano, Cosmic Soup Recording was born. We partnered up and rented a facility in North Phoenix. We had a live venue, a recording studio, rehearsal rooms and offices all enclosed in a central location. Unfortunately after two years it closed down. Even though this was a very difficult time for me, I persevered and turned into a positive experience. Now that I had some extra free time, I was asked to join local punk rock band Contradiktion by my best friend. We wrote, recorded, mix and mastered our album all in my garage. Although this wasn’t uncommon for a band to do, it was a life changing moment for me. It gave me the confidence and encouragement I needed to make the decision to run and operate Cosmic Soup Recording by myself. I have been very lucky to work with great engineers, musicians and songwriters, but this was the first time I didn’t have someone else coaching me. I was anxious and excited all at the same time. Currently I am working out of my home in North Phoenix. I am booked every day. I work mostly with hip hop and R&B artists, but I have worked on heavy metal to country to Afro-beats. I am the bassist for two very talented local bands. Contradiktion and Torn at the Seam. I am also involved with several other projects. I love keeping busy and I especially love seeing the Arizona music scene grow. There are so many great artists in the Valley and I hope to work with them all. Then eventually work with artists all over the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well it hasn’t been smooth but it hasn’t been impossible. I have been very lucky along the way and I try to think of any struggle as a learning experience. I learned very early on that it can be difficult to trust people. I have worked very hard on projects and never got paid. I have booked sessions and the artist never showed up. Or they would be hours late. I had a band come to my house, realize that I was using my garage and then leave without saying anything. Like any business, there are good months and bad months. The key is to never give up. Never stop learning. Work on my craft and let the work speak for itself.
Cosmic Soup Recording – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a home recording studio. I specialize in recording, editing, arranging, mixing and mastering audio. That includes podcast and voice over as well as transferring audio from one media to another. I am known for my quality of work, my comfortable environment and hopefully my great attitude. I am most proud of the quality of work I have done. The artists that I have helped. The knowledge I have passed on. What sets me apart is the affordable price. When I first started, I wanted to be the cheapest price in town and put out the best work. And that hasn’t changed. While most people charge twice as much as me or more, I love being able to record a young artist that has a very limited budget and hopefully make an impact on their life.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was actually when I first started recording out of my Mom’s garage. It was the first time I heard something I recorded and mixed on the radio. That gave me the validation that what I was doing was “radio quality”. And I am just as proud, even to this day, every time I hear something I recorded on the radio.
