Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Leah Manak of Mazama Washington

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Leah Manak. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Leah, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I trail run with my dog in the spaces by our home in Mazama, WA! It is so beautiful and rugged up here, and we are at the confluence of two rivers, so a river dip after a long forest run is everything in the summer.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Leah Manak, and I have been a silversmith since 2016. It has been a meditation and a really nice outlet for me since then. In that time, I also pursued higher education up to a Masters in Environmental Science and Policy at Northern Arizona University. By creating space for my art, I was able to really dive deep into something that felt tactile and could be a lifelong art form. I built a small business of it and have been involved with countless engagements, weddings, and various other meaningful celebrations. I try to have my art represent what is both natural beauty but also arching toward what is magical. I grew up in the desert southwest which is truly such an enchanted landscape, and I love the idea of pulling some of that lore into my artwork. I am currently creating handmade jewelry in fine metals such as sterling silver and gold, and I am introducing more fine jewelry into my releases where I aim to source materials from reputable sources.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
This is such an interesting question. I love this because it really speaks to how I have been trying to approach my friendships and relationships that are meaningful. In a world of fast communication and instant gratification I think it is more and more easy to break a bond with someone, and a lot of it just comes down to communication or understanding. It is so hard to make mends, but it is so worth it if the relationship truly deserves it. I think a simple gesture can go a long way. Just letting the person know you care can be enough—but also, if things got really bad, a handmade piece of jewelry never hurt anyone!

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would congratulate her. For everything.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
In regard to my business, a belief that I have is that it won’t be worth it unless I’m continuing to learn and to challenge myself with it. I hope that I hold onto the “ever-curious” mindset as long as I can.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
In the company of my loved ones.
