We recently had the chance to connect with Keisha Symone’ and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Keisha , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me right now, preparing to go back to school( BA in progress) , preparing to go back to work ( I’m a teacher) and constantly finding ways to promote my business.
This is my second year as a teacher and this year I’ll be in 1st and 2nd grade; exciting. When I’m not doing my 9-5 work stuff, 10 Sweet Treats comes next.
Trying to find more ways to promote, get funding, new customers and new techniques for my business.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi my name is Keisha Symone’ and I am the owner of 10 Sweet Treats; serving delicious desserts and treats. I’ve been nominated for bakery of the year and placed as a top 10 finalists to be in the Forbes Magazine and mentored by Daymond John.
I’ve been baking since a little girl like 11 maybe and all thanks to my mom, it’s a passion of mine. Hoping to own my own bakery some day.
Making cheesecakes will always be my first baby and everything follows but still delicious. I also offer cookies, brownies, pies, dipped treats and much more. One unique about my business, we let the customers choose the name of the flavor. If a customer mixes flavors together and it goes well, we let them name that flavor.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
It’s actually a few people who taught me about work but the one whose strength I saw most; my mom. I mean, I’ve seen my mom work 2 jobs, 7 days a week.
I mean she has literally left one job and went straight to the other one, I’m talking off by 7am and at the next by 8/830. My mom is now 62, doesn’t look a day over 50 and soon will be retiring.
I do this for my mom, so when she does retire, it’s as easy as 123.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Whew, yes plenty of times.
More so when I moved to California, originally from Detroit, MI. At the time, I was only in business for 1.5 years, so the feeling of starting over in a big state, major city was scary.
That means, more promoting, businesses that’s like yours, new clients and just new everything. S0, when things were going slow, and I wasn’t getting any orders, I was thinking about quitting.
I had orders every now and then but nothing like how it was back home. Then Valentines Day 2022 came and that’s when things started to pick up. Stayed in California for 2.5 years and moved to Arizona, January 2024.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My family! My family and my husband means the world to me. I’m very blessed to have both my parents still here and well, and all my siblings too.
Being the baby of the family, moving to California and then Arizona, was very hard and depressing, well when I first moved. I’ve never been away from my family for that long and whew, I had my days. But now, I just visit every year.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I had only 10 years left of living, I would probably quit my job as a teacher and focus more on my business. I don’t want to die, working for someone else.
I hope to have my business prosper with a few years to fulfill that dream. I want my business to be passed down to my children, nieces/nephews and godchildren. I want to show them, they can go for whatever dream they have.
