We recently had the chance to connect with Iliamari Vazquez Houston and have shared our conversation below.
Iliamari Vazquez, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes — recently I’ve felt so proud celebrating my Puerto Rican heritage! Listening to Bad Bunny’s new album, Debi Tirar Mas Fotos, filled me with joy, but being in a room packed with Puerto Ricans at his concert in Puerto Rico was unforgettable — the music pulsing through the air, the collective energy of voices singing together, the rhythm of drums in my chest — it deepened my love for my culture and roots in a way I’ll never forget.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Iliamari Houston, founder of With An Open Heart LLC — a space dedicated to healing, growth, and connection. My work blends therapy, movement, and intentional practices to help individuals and communities reclaim joy, resilience, and wholeness. What makes my approach unique is the heart-centered integration of modalities like EMDR, IFS, and somatic practices — all rooted in cultural awareness and inclusivity. Right now, I’m focused on creating healing programs and spaces that uplift BIPOC communities, honor cultural roots, and inspire transformation both individually and collectively.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that has most shaped how I see myself is the one I have with my children, my son and my daughter. They inspire me to be a healthier, more present version of myself — not just for me, but so I can show them the beauty of living with intention. So I can show them the beauty in breaking generational cycles as well. I want them to feel the rhythm of our roots, taste our traditions, hear our stories, and carry with them a deep pride in where they came from; and then make it their own versions. So they can keep healing themselves and future generations.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to speak up bravely, even when it feels scary, and to wrap myself in kindness along the way. I’d remind her that mistakes don’t define her — they teach her — and that her voice, her heart, and her self-love are her greatest strengths. Most of all, I’d tell her she is worth it and worthy of love and support, always.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to holding space for those who want to weave culture into their healing journeys — no matter how long it takes. I believe that honoring our roots, traditions, and stories is like lighting a fire within the soul, a fire that brings connection, resilience, and transformation. This is a path worth dedicating a lifetime to.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m moving in a way that grounds me — whether it’s gentle stretching, mindful movement, or walking in nature — and then coming home to rest with my kids. Being surrounded by their laughter, feeling the comfort of home, and allowing myself to slow down creates a deep sense of presence, connection, and calm.
