We recently had the chance to connect with Brooke Massey and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Brooke, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I see myself as both walking a path and wandering. I have clear goals and values that guide me, my path is focused on growing as a professional and contributing meaningfully. At the same time, I embrace wandering by staying open to new experiences, learning from unexpected opportunities, and adapting as I grow. I think balance between intention and exploration helps me develop in the most authentic way
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Brooke, the creative force behind DarkenedLover Photography. I specialize in capturing candid, authentic moments with a hint of dark and moody atmosphere, images that feel real and raw, yet carry a mysterious, emotional depth. My style combines natural emotion with dramatic shadows and tones to create photos that tell a story beyond what’s seen.
What makes my brand unique is this balance of honesty and artistry, showing life’s genuine moments through a lens that embraces both light and shadow. I’m currently working on expanding into digital products like trading cards, magazine covers, and possibly a photography eBook that explores these themes even deeper.
Through my work, I aim to reveal the beauty found in truth and the power hidden in subtle darkness.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work is definitely my grandfather, Gary. He was a military veteran and a truly hard worker, someone who believed in discipline, dedication, and doing things with integrity. Watching him approach every challenge with resilience and a strong work ethic left a lasting impression on me. He showed me that success isn’t just about talent or luck, but about persistence, commitment, and pride in what you do.
His example continues to inspire how I approach my own work every day.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me lessons that success alone never could, like resilience, humility, and deeper self-awareness. When things are hard, you’re forced to confront your limits, fears, and doubts. It strips away any illusions and reveals what truly matters.
Through suffering, I learned to appreciate growth over comfort and to find strength in vulnerability. Success is rewarding, but suffering teaches you how to keep going when success feels out of reach, and that kind of endurance shapes your character in a way triumphs never can.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
In photography, differentiating between fads and real foundational shifts means looking at how changes affect the art and craft over time. Fads might be flashy filters, trendy poses, or viral editing styles that catch on quickly but soon fade as photographers move on to the next thing.
Foundational shifts, however, transform how we create and experience photography, like the move from film to digital, the rise of mobile photography, or the growing importance of storytelling and authenticity in images. These shifts change the tools, techniques, or mindset in ways that stick around and evolve with the medium.
I pay attention to whether a new trend helps photographers tell more meaningful stories or improves the craft fundamentally, rather than just being a temporary aesthetic. The ones that last tend to influence how future photographers work and how audiences connect with images.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
