Kayla Alonzo of Honolulu on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Kayla Alonzo and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Kayla, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think a lot of people quietly struggle with feeling “behind” in life. I know I have, and honestly, sometime I still do. It’s hard not to compare your timeline to everyone else’s, especially when it feels like you’re doing everything “right” but still stuck. What helps me is reminding myself that growth isn’t always loud or visible but sometimes it’s happening quietly and knowing where I am now was also a dream not to long ago.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve always believed stories have the power to make people feel something real—and that’s what drew me to editing. I grew up in Hawai‘i, constantly inspired by the people, places, and emotions that shaped my world. From a young age, I dreamed of telling stories that mattered, ones that linger long after the final frame.

That love for storytelling led me to earn my BFA in Digital Film Production, and eventually to where I am now—editing stories in a way that feels honest and intentional. Mainly focused on editing wedding films & shaping real, emotional moments into something lasting, I’ve also had the privilege of working on long-form pieces and short-form social content, always searching for the emotional thread that makes a story resonate.

No matter the format, my goal is simple: to bring stories to life with rhythm, connection, and heart.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
A lot of people spend their whole lives waiting to be believed in but I never had to. Growing up, my parents always saw something in me, even when I didn’t. As immigrants, they gave up so much so I could have more, and when I told them I wanted to study film, they never questioned it. They put me through college, supported me creatively and emotionally, and made me feel like I what I was chasing wasn’t far off from what they had dreamed for me, even in the moments I doubted myself. They’ve always held a vision of me that I’m still learning to grow into and I’m endlessly grateful for that.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
More times than I can count. There was a time I felt like nothing I was doing was working, I was constantly pouring so much of myself into things that at the time I felt like weren’t growing, weren’t being seen, and weren’t leading anywhere. I remember I would quietly ask myself if maybe what I was doing was meant for me after all. But something—maybe hope, maybe stubbornness, maybe the quiet belief of the people who love me kept me going. I reminded myself why I wanted this in the first place, and that was enough to try again.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I’m a firm believer that what’s truly meant for you will eventually come to you—in some way, shape, or form. Maybe not in the way you pictured, maybe not when you expected it, but it finds a way. Things have a way of circling back, aligning, or gently unfolding when the time was right, and it’s made me trust that what’s meant for you won’t miss you. Call it God, the universe, divine intervention; what’s meant for you will find its way to you.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
What people might overlook about my legacy is the quiet weight of what I do. Editing wedding films might seem simple or surface-level to some, but to me, it’s about capturing something sacred—those fleeting moments where people reveal the most honest, unfiltered parts of themselves. It’s preserving love in its rawest form, and while it might not always be seen as groundbreaking work, I know it leaves a lasting impact on the people whose stories I get to tell.
