Jan Griggs of Cave Creek on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jan Griggs. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Jan, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
My granddaughter is 6 years old and loves arts and crafts. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up she says “an artist.” She recently “graduated “ from kindergarten and when asked what she was going to be, she replied to the classroom full of parents and family that not only was she going to be an artist but she was going to be a famous artist. I have no doubt that this strong little girl will accomplish her goal.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have been an artist all my life but didn’t start painting until I hit 60. A workshop in Taos New Mexico opened up the universe of abstract painting to me and I took off running. I discovered my passion. I think it’s the journey as much as the result that keeps me going. I love the feel of brushing paint onto canvas, and the colors! I can get lost in a complex deep blue green or firery red. I’m always trying new ideas and mediums to feed the creative hunger.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
That inner voice and criticism that I’m not good enough, not deserving, and it’s best not to try because you will just be disappointed. The only purpose of this voice is to hold me back. Overcoming it is a constant battle but I usually win

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are gifted and beautiful. Make your life what you want it to be and don’t beat yourself up.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Loyalty, family, and my art. I’m fiercely loyal to my friends and people who have been with me through this journey. My family always comes first. I am so thankful for my artistic gift and the opportunity to express myself in a way that people can interact with.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
It sounds silly, but I regret my inability to comprehend math. Algebra and geometry are like a foreign language to me. My brain just isn’t wired that way. I think math is like another art form, another dimension, a different way of comprehending. It remains a mystery to me.
