Today we’d like to introduce you to Polly Chan.
Hi Polly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career has always been centered around helping people. I spent nearly 18 years at Verizon, where I learned the importance of listening, building relationships, and finding the right solutions for each customer.
As I built my career in the insurance industry, I had the opportunity to experience both independent and captive insurance environments. Those experiences gave me a broader understanding of the industry and helped me discover where I could make the biggest difference for my clients.
Ultimately, I returned to HealthMarkets as an independent insurance agent because I value the ability to compare plans from multiple insurance companies and recommend coverage based on each client’s unique needs, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
I also believe in educating my clients so they can make informed decisions and feel confident about the coverage they choose, rather than feeling overwhelmed by the process.
Today, I have the privilege of helping individuals, families, Medicare beneficiaries, and small businesses navigate health insurance with confidence. Whether someone is enrolling in Medicare for the first time, shopping for Marketplace coverage, or looking for life insurance, my goal is to make the process simple, easy to understand, and as stress-free as possible.
To me, insurance isn’t just about policies—it’s about helping people protect their health, their finances, and their peace of mind.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
When I left Verizon after nearly 18 years, I was fortunate to be recognized as one of the top consultants in the Southwest territory. I was used to working within a large organization where there were structured training programs, established systems, and teams to support different aspects of the business. My job was to understand my customers’ needs and provide the best solution.
Becoming self-employed was a completely different experience. I quickly realized that being an independent business owner meant wearing many hats. In addition to helping clients, I also had to become my own marketer, administrator, scheduler, trainer, and problem solver. There was no set schedule, no manager checking in, and no roadmap to follow. Success continues to depend on staying disciplined, continuously learning, and being resourceful every single day.
Although my first year with HealthMarkets was successful, I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time because I was comparing myself to the consistency and structure I had experienced in corporate America. Insurance is seasonal, and as an independent agent there are naturally busy periods and slower periods. That was a big adjustment for me.
After leaving HealthMarkets and working for captive insurance companies, I gained a new perspective. I realized how valuable it is to have the freedom to compare multiple insurance carriers and recommend the coverage that truly fits each client’s unique situation, rather than being limited to a single company’s products.
Returning to HealthMarkets as an independent agent was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It allows me to put my clients’ needs first while also creating the flexibility and work-life balance that’s important to me and my family. Looking back, every challenge taught me something valuable, and those experiences have made me a better advisor today.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At HealthMarkets, my goal is to simplify what is often one of the most confusing decisions people face—choosing the right insurance coverage. I work with individuals, families, Medicare beneficiaries, and small businesses, helping them compare health, Medicare, life, supplemental, and small group insurance options from multiple insurance companies.
What sets my business apart is that I take an educational approach rather than a sales approach. Insurance is filled with unfamiliar terms, deadlines, and plan choices, and many people feel overwhelmed before they even begin. I believe my role is to explain the options clearly, answer questions honestly, and help clients understand both the advantages and limitations of each plan so they can make confident decisions.
Because I am an independent agent, I am not limited to a single insurance company. That allows me to compare plans from multiple carriers and recommend coverage based on each person’s healthcare needs, budget, preferred doctors, prescriptions, and long-term goals. Every client has a unique situation, and I enjoy finding solutions that fit their circumstances rather than trying to fit everyone into the same plan.
I also pride myself on being a long-term resource, not just someone who helps during enrollment. Whether a client needs assistance understanding a bill, reviewing their coverage, navigating Medicare, or preparing for life changes, I want them to know they have someone they can call. Building lasting relationships and earning my clients’ trust is the most rewarding part of my work.
At the end of the day, my business is about much more than insurance policies. It’s about helping people protect their health, their finances, and their peace of mind while making a complicated process feel simple, personal, and approachable.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is making a positive difference in people’s lives while maintaining integrity in everything I do. Insurance is more than choosing a plan—it’s helping someone protect their health, their family, and their financial future. I never want my clients to feel pressured or confused. Instead, I want them to feel informed, supported, and confident that they made the right decision for their unique situation.
Family is also incredibly important to me. Becoming an independent insurance agent has given me the opportunity to build a career that allows me to serve my clients while also being present for my own family. That balance reminds me every day why I do this work. I understand that behind every insurance policy is a real person, a family, and a future they’re trying to protect.
At the end of the day, success isn’t measured only by the number of policies I help someone enroll in. It’s measured by the trust I earn, the relationships I build, and by knowing my clients feel comfortable calling me whenever they need guidance.
