Hidden Gems: Meet Diana Canfield of Canfield Counseling

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Diana Canfield.

Diana Canfield

Hi Diana, we’re so excited to have you on the platform. Before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating with my master’s in counseling, I had many experiences with different populations and settings. I have worked with the adult and juvenile prison population, sex offenders, adolescents in group homes, severely mentally ill individuals, tribal behavioral health and substance abuse, etc.

This broad experience has helped me tremendously in being able to supervise associate counselors and interns and teach them the skills needed to be an excellent therapist with a broad range of clients. I have always had a private practice since getting my counseling license in 2008. In 2016, I started taking on interns and associate-level therapists. My practice has grown to include 20 therapists.

We focus on providing best-practice therapy to a wide range of clients. We specialize in trauma, equine therapy, and LGBTQIA+ affirming care. We see clients of all ages and provide individual, couples, family, equine, and group therapy.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is always a struggle to start and maintain a small business.

I definitely learn as I go. Covid was a struggle, but I was so glad we could be there for so many people struggling with their mental health during that time.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Canfield Counseling?
Canfield Counseling provides counseling services for all ages. We provide individual, couples, family, group, and equine therapy.

We are LGBTQIA+-affirming and trained. We specialize in trauma treatment and have several therapists trained in EMDR, IFS, and equine therapy. We take most major insurances and offer a low rate with our pre-licensed therapist.

Are any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
We love the following books! The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD. No Bad Parts Richard Schwartz PhD. It Wasn’t Your Fault Beverly Engel. Stop Walking on Egg Shells Paul T. Mason, MS, and Randi Kreger.
