Exploring Life & Business with Shelby Lutz of 4L Learning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Lutz

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Human Development and Family Sciences. During my years in college I competed and became 2012 Miss Rodeo Oregon. Within that year as Miss Rodeo Oregon I traveled the United States volunteering at children’s hospitals, visiting elementary schools and attending rodeo related events. In that experience I fell even more in love with teaching, learning and education. I wanted to take my degree and become part of the positive change in children’s lives and education.
I continued to follow that drive and passion and completed my Masters Degree from George Fox University, and headed to Rwanda Africa to teach Professional Development Seminars and Primary school. I came back to the United States to teach for the following 6 years before starting my own school “4L Learning”.
4L Learning is a Christian Based Private School for rodeo students. It is designed to be taught like a homeschool program but with a live teacher (myself). It gives students the flexibility to learn in any setting, at their own pace and provides more one on one help.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Adding students to my enrollment in the beginning was a challenge but a necessary and rewarding challenge. For parents, making the shift into a nontraditional way of learning can be a scary leap of faith. 4L Learning started out with 12 students and has successfully added student enrollment to a total of 41 for the 2024-2025 school year.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
4L Learning is an online private homeschool program for rodeo students. It promotes a positive learning environment while cultivating a supportive and strong community among students, families and teachers.

4L Learning focuses on grades 1st – 8th and has partnered with another school JML Learning for 9th – 12th grades. Together we help to create a learning experience that affects academic success while allowing students to pursue their passions outside the classroom. The academic freedom that comes with homeschool also promotes responsibility and accountability to students as they take their education into their own hands.

How do you define success?
I find success through my students success. I feel successful as I inspire and impact today’s youth in their education.
