Exploring Life & Business with Magdalena Alvarez of Ensenada street food

Today we’d like to introduce you to Magdalena Alvarez.

Hi Magdalena, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in a humble neighborhood in Ensenada, Baja California, where tacos were more than just food they were part of everyday life. They were affordable, comforting, and something that brought people together. Some of my favorite memories are of my mother’s cooking. Her recipes were filled with love, and even after moving to Arizona, I deeply missed those authentic flavors from home.

When I came to the United States, I started cooking the dishes I grew up with because they reminded me of my family and my roots. I would bring homemade food to work and share it with my coworkers. One day, my manager tasted my food and asked me, “Why don’t you sell this?” That simple question planted the seed that eventually became my business.

Starting a food truck was exciting, but it was far from easy. Like many small business owners, we’ve experienced difficult economic changes, rising costs, and many obstacles along the way. There were times when we had to leave locations because we weren’t allowed to stay, and there were moments when we questioned how we would keep moving forward. Every challenge taught us something and made us stronger.

Today, I am incredibly grateful that our food truck has become one of Tucson’s favorite women-owned food trucks. That recognition means so much because it represents years of sacrifice, perseverance, and hard work.

This business has always been 100% woman-owned and family-operated. While I lead the business, I would never have made it this far without the support of my family. My partner Catalina, my daughters Rachel & Sharon , my mother Martha and many friends have stood beside me through every challenge, celebrating every success and helping during the hardest moments. This business is truly a family dream built together.

More than selling tacos, my mission is to share a piece of Ensenada with every customer. I want people to experience the same authentic flavors that remind me of home and the meals my mother lovingly prepared for our family.

If my journey has taught me anything, it’s that your beginnings do not define your future. With hard work, resilience, and the support of the people who believe in you, it’s possible to turn a simple idea into something meaningful that brings joy to an entire community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth journey. If anything, it’s been filled with challenges from the very beginning.

We started by selling at swap meets, on street corners, and anywhere we could find an opportunity. Many of those places didn’t welcome us, and there were times when we were asked to leave. As a small, women-owned business, every step required determination and resilience.

Eventually, we opened our own location, which felt like a dream come true. We invested  a lot and worked hard to create a space we were proud of. But despite all that effort, changing economic conditions, rising costs, and the challenges facing small businesses forced us to close our doors. It was heartbreaking, but it didn’t stop us.

Every obstacle has taught us to adapt, stay creative, and keep moving forward. Today, those difficult experiences are part of what makes Ensenada Street Food stronger. We know that success isn’t about never falling it’s about having the courage to get back up, learn, and continue pursuing your dream.

Like my mom says “tú eres arquitecto de tu propio destino it means “you are the architect of your own destiny “.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ensenada Street Food is a women-owned business that brings the authentic flavors of Ensenada, Baja California, to Arizona. Our mission is simple: to serve fresh, authentic Mexican street food while creating memorable experiences for every guest.

We specialize in catering for all types of events, from weddings and private parties to festivals, breweries, corporate gatherings, and large community events. No matter the size of the event, we focus on delivering high-quality food, exceptional service, and an experience that people remember.

Our menu is inspired by family recipes and the traditional flavors I grew up with. We are especially known for our authentic Ensenada-style tacos  and handcrafted salsas. We also proudly offer vegan and vegetarian options because we believe everyone deserves to enjoy great food and feel included, regardless of their dietary preferences.

What truly sets us apart is our heart. We are a 100% women-powered business, and every event reflects our passion, teamwork, and dedication. We don’t just serve meals we create connections through food, culture, and hospitality.

Over the years, we’ve partnered with many local breweries and organizations throughout Arizona, bringing people together through food at some of the city’s most exciting events. Whether we’re serving a wedding with hundreds of guests or a neighborhood festival, we approach every event with the same level of care and authenticity.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The characteristic that has helped me achieve success is perseverance.

This journey has not always been easy, but every challenge has taught us how to adapt, grow, and reinvent ourselves. Every time we have fallen, we have found a way to stand back up stronger and continue moving forward.

I believe our success comes from never giving up, being willing to change when necessary, and always staying true to who we are. But above everything, it comes from the love and passion we put into what we do. When you truly love your work, that passion is reflected in the food, the service, and the connections you create with people.

Ensenada Street Food is not just a business for us it is a dream built with dedication, resilience, and heart. Our story is proof that with perseverance, creativity, and love for what you do, challenges can become opportunities.
