Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Sage.
Hi Dennis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After a 10 year career managing symphony orchestras, I was convinced to learn how to sell by a friend. I jumped into the most difficult arena that was available to me at the time selling fireplaces in the desert. It was very similar to selling icecubes to Eskimos. To survive, I needed to be a quick study and in the process learned to sell. The company suddenly closed its doors and I was left unemployed for the first time in my career. Fast forward after losing just about everything to a timely call from a recruiter looking for someone that knew how to work with builders and who knew something about music. I was hired to pioneer a new division selling music systems to builders that could be included in the building process. It was a tremendous success. After 5 years of rapid growth, I was convinced to explore starting my own business due to the frustrations experienced with the current company. I started my company in 1995 and now 30 years later I still own and operate Dennis Sage Home Entertainment with an amazing team of employees. For brevity, I left out a lot of details!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Anything lasting 30 or more years is filled with many ups and downs. There were times of great struggle where survival was questioned. The great recession of 2006 almost undid us. Covid was very difficult and now the tariff debacle is threatening our sanity. The current state of youth and their lackluster work ethic is very concerning and a daily struggle. However, there have been many more successes than letdowns.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dennis Sage Home Entertainment?
We are a low voltage contractor providing a wide variety of products and services to homes and businesses. Audio, video, security, automation, smart homes, distributed A/V services, networks, motorized shading solutions, lighting systems and vacuum systems are our main expertise. We are one of the oldest and most respected companies in our industry providing these services in the greater Phoenix area. We are family owned with family values. We were founded with the principals of honesty, fairness and respect of our clients. Our referral network is our crown jewell and saves me thousands in advertising cost. We service the greater Phoenix area. Since 1995, we have been making smart homes intelligent!
What makes you happy?
That is a loaded question! Golfing with my 4 boys, chasing my grandkids, reading a good book, a good bottle of wine, employees that show up for work, customers saying “Yes”, a good concert, friends, travel, the outdoors (in the good months!), my sister, writing a new song, a fun date, learning, quiet early mornings, a new restaurant, a good hug, a smile, a compliment, etc. For brevity, I left out many details!!
