We recently had the chance to connect with Eric Ramsey and have shared our conversation below.
Eric , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
We have four rescue dogs, and the first part of my day involves walking them. In the summer I start by 4:30am; it’s the only way to avoid burning paws and potential heatstroke. Otis is always first, then PiggySue, then Wink. Bug can’t be bothered until a much more civilized hour. The upside to this ridiculous schedule is (1) There’s no traffic, (2) there are rarely other dogs (or humans, for that matter which is a bonus for a latent misanthrope like myself), (3) the morning sky gradually lightens from indigo to cobalt to aquamarine, which is certainly beautiful to watch. This morning we were treated to a view of (west to east) Uranus, Venus and Jupiter. Sleep is for sissies anyway.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Eric Ramsey. I’m an independent songwriter and multi instrumentalist. In 2022 I was fortunate to win the International Blues Challenge (an international performance competition). I’ve been a full time musician for about 10 years. Prior to that I was a very part time player and had a career as an electrician. In 2015 my wife and family gave me the opportunity to pursue music full time. Any and every thing I’ve accomplished in my musical journey points directly back to my family and their selfless support.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a child I was firmly convinced that I would be a professional baseball player. And while I had some athletic success when I was younger, the passing of time has a way of changing your perspective. While music has always been a big part of my life, I never planned to be a professional musician. That was just act of evolution.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You know, little Eric, you don’t have to be perfect at everything you do. It’s all gonna be all right.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The music industry likes to tell itself the that everyone has just as good a chance of success as any star currently out there. That the industry is not a machine that turns out formulaic, generic product to maximize its profits. It tells itself that it values creativity.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d stop procrastinating. Tomorrow.
