Today, we’d like to introduce you to Stephen.
Hi Stephen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a dad, a husband, a lifelong learner, and the owner of Arcadia Portrait Works and Arcadia Boudoir. I bought a “nice” camera about seven years ago to try to learn how to use it for documenting my wife’s pregnancy. Instead of taking beginner courses, I dove headfirst into advanced classes such as maternity posing and studio lighting, hoping the advanced classes would compel me to understand the basics. They did, but it was definitely a crash course.
One of those classes was boudoir-style posing. At the time I just thought of it as another advanced class, but it was more than that. It was transformative. I was working on my fitness, and the class inspired me to try my own photoshoot. I typically dislike photos of myself, but I trusted the photographer and she created some of the first portraits of me that I ever really liked. That experience changed my perspective and ignited a new purpose. With my wife’s encouragement and advice from supportive mentors in the boudoir photography community, I launched my business to use my camera and my own experience as a catalyst for boosting others’ confidence.
What began as a crash course in photography and an experiment in entrepreneurship has evolved into something deeply meaningful. Collaborating with incredible women, helping them rediscover their confidence and see themselves in a new light, became not just a business venture. It’s now a part of my identity and a vehicle for personal growth in compassion and empathy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is full of surprises and new responsibilities, but I’m grateful it has been smooth. The behind-the-scenes administrative stuff and learning how to market my business can be a chore, but I remind myself that I’m here for the good vibes and to grow as a person and as a business owner, so it’s all a great learning experience.
I’ve occasionally felt a little bit of “imposter syndrome,” but time, experience, and recognition by the community as a legitimate photographer have made me feel like I belong here. Somewhat surprisingly, I don’t get a lot of “What is this man doing in this business?” If I’m not the right fit for a client, I don’t take it personally. Everyone has their preferences, and I’m happy to help someone find their ideal photographer.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My mission is to deliver classy and — of course — sexy images that my clients cherish. I’ll highlight your beauty and sensuality with a customized boudoir portrait session in a fun, comfortable, luxurious, and relaxed atmosphere.
I’m proud of my compassionate and empathetic perspective from having been on both sides of the camera and from having worked with many inspiring women with their own unique stories and goals for their sessions, whether it’s to celebrate a milestone, create a gift for a partner, to overcome struggles with self-esteem and self-perceptions, or just for a fun day of luxury and pampering.
I could say that my perspective as a male in an industry typically associated with female photographers sets me apart, but that’s only part of the story. I approach every session not from a male perspective, but from a human perspective. How would my clients want to see themselves? How can I photograph in a way that aligns with my client’s goals? Those are the questions I ask myself.
I’m also a bit of a perfectionist. I won’t quit until my work is as good as it can be. That includes the time I spent preparing for this interview (ha!).
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Everyone should try a boudoir photoshoot at least once. Boudoir is typically in glamorous or cozy lingerie, but it doesn’t always have to be.
A boudoir photoshoot can be a transformative experience in a sweatshirt or pajamas. Boudoirs can be modest, revealing, cozy, glamorous, or anything you want it to be.
It’s all about comfort and self-appreciation. The right boudoir photographer will work for you to love the images of yourself. Who wouldn’t want that?
