Today we’d like to introduce you to Katz (Amanda) Merkatz
Hi Katz, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into tattooing wasn’t the typical path. I’ve always been artistically inclined, but school was never my strong suit—I’m dyslexic, so traditional learning felt like trying to fit into a mold that wasn’t made for me. Art, though, was my language. It was how I processed the world, how I communicated when words failed me.
I started tattooing as a way to connect with people on a deeper level. It wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about storytelling. I quickly fell in love with the idea that I could create something deeply personal and permanent for someone—whether it was a delicate fineline piece, an heirloom handwriting tattoo, or something that captured their grief, joy, or transformation.
My career really took off through social media. Instagram and TikTok helped me gain traction, leading to features in People, InStyle, OK Magazine, and PageSix. That visibility opened doors to working with influencers and brands, like my collaboration with Alo Gym in LA. I’ve also tattooed in different cities—LA, Seattle, and Arizona—to reach a broader clientele.
Now, I’m focused on growing my brand beyond just tattooing. I offer online courses for aspiring artists and am looking to collaborate with brands like Poppi, Benefit, Tarte, and Rare Beauty. I’d also love to continue building my reputation in the luxury tattoo space and attract celebrity clientele.
It’s been a mix of hustle, strategy, and a deep passion for what I do. Every tattoo I create is a reflection of my journey—of overcoming challenges, finding my voice through art, and helping others tell their stories through ink.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped me into the artist and business owner I am today.
In the beginning, I had to carve out my own lane in the tattoo industry. I didn’t just want to be another artist—I wanted to create something deeply personal and meaningful. I built my brand around fineline and micro-realism, focusing on pieces that tell a story.
School was never easy for me—I struggled with dyslexia, which made traditional learning a challenge. But art was always my outlet, and it became my way of communicating when words weren’t enough. Tattooing gave me a chance to connect with others through storytelling and creativity, and that became my driving force.
Social media played a huge role in my success, helping me attract high-end clients and get featured in People, InStyle, OK Magazine, and PageSix. But with social media, there’s always an element of unpredictability. Algorithms change, engagement fluctuates, and staying visible takes strategy. I’ve had to continuously evolve—expanding my reach through influencer collaborations, traveling to cities like LA and Seattle, and offering online courses to help other artists.
Now, I’m focused on elevating my brand even further—booking celebrity clients, collaborating with luxury brands, and continuing to grow in the high-end tattoo space. It’s been a journey of passion, persistence, and smart business moves, and I’m only getting started.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is all about creating tattoos that tell a deeply personal story, whether it’s a client’s journey of healing, celebrating a milestone, or honoring a loved one. I specialize in fineline, micro-realism, white ink tattoos, and delicate ornamental designs. Each piece I create is designed to be not just visually striking, but emotionally resonant.
What I’m most proud of is the connection I’ve been able to build with my clients. I’m known for creating meaningful tattoos—pieces that are unique to each person and reflect their individual experiences. Whether it’s an heirloom family tattoo written in someone’s grandmother’s handwriting or a subtle yet powerful tribute to a personal story, I love that my work can evoke emotion and help people carry their stories with them.
I’m also really proud of how my work has evolved. I’ve found a way to blend artistry with business, expanding beyond just tattooing to offer online courses for other artists and collaborating with brands. But what really sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity. I stay true to my style and vision, even when the industry gets saturated or trends shift. Staying grounded in what I believe makes my work stand out in a way that resonates with my clients, from the moment they book to the experience they have in the chair.
It’s not just about the tattoo—it’s about the story, the connection, and the meaning behind it. That’s what I believe sets me apart from others.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along my journey is patience. There are so many things to learn in this industry—new techniques, business strategies, and ways to connect with clients. But patience has been the key to everything. It’s not just about waiting for things to happen; it’s about trusting the process and knowing that the best results come with time.
When it comes to tattooing, patience allows me to do my best work. Taking the time to listen to my clients, to refine the details of a design, and to approach each tattoo with care and precision is what makes a piece truly special. Rushing through the process never leads to my best work. It’s in those moments of patience that I can focus and deliver something that’s not only technically perfect but also deeply meaningful for the client.
Patience has also opened doors for the best opportunities. In a world where everything feels fast-paced and instant, learning to slow down and wait for the right moments has brought me the most rewarding experiences—like building genuine relationships with clients, getting featured in magazines, and partnering with brands. It’s the slow, steady approach that’s led to lasting success.
