Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Flury.
Hi Jared, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Starting back in 2019, after years of battling anxiety, depression, and a general sense of “what’s the point?”, I had a revelation in the least likely of places. A chain candle store. I have always loved candles, soaps and other personal care products, but every scent was usually so artificial and overwhelming to the senses, they could probably raise the dead! I had an epiphany and realized, “Wait a minute, these smell all the same (and give me headaches)… and also, why isn’t there anything fun out here for horror lovers like me?”
Just like that, a lightbulb went off in my head. Why not create something eerie, elegant, and just a bit extra (think luxury on a budget)? Thus, the idea for a horror themed candle company was born. I hadn’t taken it that seriously when I was living near Seattle, but when I moved to Arizona in 2021, doors unexpectedly opened for me and now I have a wonderful network of fellow artists, opportunities and friends at the tip of my fingers thanks to the community I have found here.
Now, instead of wandering through life like a ghost, I have found my purpose in creating & sharing an expanded product lineup of candles, melts, perfumes, room spray & more! I may be small now, but one day, I hope to haunt homes everywhere with our creepy creations. In the meantime, we’re just happy to be alive (and smelling great).
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been anything but a smooth road building a brand! I suffer from debilitating depression & anxiety which is part of what also drove me to creating Made By Macabre. I didn’t want to be a victim of my circumstances so while it made working a “normal” job quite difficult a few years ago, I decided I needed to do something and contribute to the world in one way or another. So my way of doing that is to hopefully bring a small amount of joy and respite to my customers with my products.
Resources have been a big obstacle lately as well! More businesses are shutting down left & right which actually recently affected my signature scents I originally launched my brand with. So having to pivot and adjust my product line has been a headache. But alternatively, I am using this as an opportunity to bring you new scents, products and more. It’s unfortunate- but its a way to get the creative juices flowing again!
I am working on this myself, but as a Virgo, I have a constant need to perfect my craft. So even though I receive nothing but positive feedback on my products, I feel like I have imposter syndrome still! I want every person that supports me to receive a wonderful experience they cannot find anywhere else so I am always striving to better myself and my brand!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Right now I am working on Macabre full time and going to local markets in the valley to get my name out there!
I specialize in “misfortune” candles with original stories and designs! Under every lid is unique bad horror movie advice that will be “cursed”. The idea is to poke fun at horror tropes and the questionable decisions the cast makes in this genre. I include tweezers with every candle purchase because at the bottom of the candle wax when it’s done burning unveils a “warding charm”. A little trinket you collect to cancel out my curse and the more you collect, the more protection you have against every day evils. Beyond the beautifully specialized scents I create for my candles, this is the main feature that sets me apart from other candle brands.
I am most known for my misfortune candles but have since expanded my product line to whipped soap, wearable fragrances, wax melts, enamel pins, shirts and so much more!
I am most proud of the fact I have not (and will never) give up on Macabre no matter how hard it gets. My business and supporters mean the absolute world to me.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
OOO yes! Books, podcasts and other media are a constant source of inspiration for me! Over the past few months, I have spent my time listening to “The Hello, Sidney” podcast and it has been a BLAST! It’s like listening to a friend discuss watching horror movies you may have seen before, but she is so fun. She’s inspired me to revisit some absolute bangers I haven’t seen in probably two decades. Which then helps me conjure up keywords or images that help inspire scents, names or designs! I have a whole ideas list in my phone with inspirational words, quotes or images I may come across randomly.
