Community Highlights: Meet Sky Burgess of Hoousing by Sky

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sky Burgess.

Hi Sky , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Before starting Housing by Sky, I worked in a variety of industries, including hospitality, where I gained experience in bars, hotels, reception, and customer service. Those roles taught me the importance of hard work, communication, and putting people first, but I always knew I wanted to build something of my own that offered more freedom, purpose, and opportunity.

I then spent two years working for a real estate company, where I learned the industry from the ground up. That experience gave me the confidence and knowledge to take the leap and start Housing by Sky. My goal was to create a business that not only gave me the independence I was looking for but also genuinely helped people find a place to call home.

Today, Housing by Sky has grown into a trusted rental agency in Amsterdam, and I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve built. Looking back, every job I had taught me something valuable and helped shape the entrepreneur I am today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges wasn’t the business itself—it was overcoming imposter syndrome. As Housing by Sky grew, I found myself attracting more clients and earning more than I ever had before. It was exciting, but also unfamiliar, and there were moments when I questioned whether I truly deserved that level of success.

That experience taught me that building a business is just as much about personal growth as it is about strategy. I had to invest in my mindset, build my confidence, and recognise that the opportunities I was receiving were the result of years of hard work, persistence, and continuous learning. Once I truly believed that I had earned my success, I was able to lead my business with much more confidence and clarity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Housing by Sky specialises in connecting landlords with reliable tenants. Having lived in three different countries myself, I understand first-hand both the excitement and the uncertainty that comes with starting over in a new place. That experience has shaped the way I do business and reminds me that behind every tenancy is a person beginning a new chapter in their life.

What sets Housing by Sky apart is our personal approach. We understand that no two landlords, properties, or tenants are the same, so we tailor our service to every situation. Although our client is the landlord, we believe a successful tenancy is one where everyone feels supported. We want landlords to feel confident in the tenant they’ve chosen, and we want tenants to feel welcomed, respected, and excited to move into their new home.

I’m most proud of the relationships we’ve built and the trust our clients place in us. We genuinely care about the people we work with and believe in going the extra mile. Even if a request falls outside our core services, we’ll always do our best to offer advice, make introductions, or point people in the right direction. For us, success isn’t just about signing a tenancy agreement—it’s about creating a positive experience for everyone involved.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s part of the journey. When I first started my business, I was afraid of making mistakes and constantly questioned whether I was making the right decisions. Over time, I realised that every challenge and setback taught me something valuable and helped me grow as both an entrepreneur and as a person.

I’ve also learned that it’s completely normal to have doubts and feel scared. Those feelings don’t mean you’re on the wrong path they’re simply part of building something meaningful. Entrepreneurship comes with highs and lows, and I’ve learned to embrace both because each challenge has helped me become more resilient.

My advice to anyone just starting is that it’s never going to be perfect, and there will never be a “right” time to begin. The only way you’ll truly learn, grow, and figure things out is by taking that first step. Starting is often the hardest part, but it’s also the most important.
