Today we’d like to introduce you to Rafael Paz.
Hi Rafael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started long before Paz Salsa officially became a business. Growing up, food was always at the center of our family. The recipes we still use today have been passed down through generations, and cooking became my way of bringing people together.
Before becoming an entrepreneur, I spent years building a career in the corporate world. While I enjoyed my work, I always dreamed of creating something of my own. I began making homemade salsa and meals for family and friends, and the response was overwhelming. In 2019, my family’s salsa recipe won the People’s Choice Award at the My Nana’s Salsa Challenge, giving me the confidence that these recipes could become something much bigger.
When the pandemic changed the way people lived and worked, I saw an opportunity to help. I started preparing and delivering homemade meals to healthcare workers, friends, and families who wanted fresh, authentic Mexican food without having to cook. What started as a small operation quickly grew through word of mouth, leading me to obtain the necessary licenses, move into a commercial kitchen, and officially build Paz Salsa.
Over the past seven years, Paz Salsa has grown from a small local business into a company that provides weekly meal prep, corporate catering, and event catering throughout the Phoenix area. Today, we’re proud to serve healthcare organizations, law firms, schools, gyms, nutrition stores, businesses, and families who trust us to provide fresh, authentic meals made from scratch.
Building a business has never been easy. Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve faced challenges, setbacks, and plenty of uncertainty. But each obstacle has made me more determined to keep improving, investing in the company, and finding new ways to serve our community. My goal has always been bigger than simply selling food, it’s about creating experiences, bringing people together, and building a company my family can be proud of.
Looking ahead, my vision is to continue growing Paz Salsa into a leading meal prep and catering brand while staying true to the family recipes and values that inspired it from the very beginning.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t have it any other way because every challenge has helped shape both me and the business.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to wear every hat. As a small business owner, you’re not just the chef, you become the accountant, marketer, salesperson, delivery driver, customer service representative, and operations manager. There have been countless early mornings, late nights, and weekends dedicated to building Paz Salsa while continuing to learn every aspect of running a business.
Like many food businesses, we’ve also faced rising food costs, inflation, labor shortages, and the challenge of standing out in a competitive industry. There have been seasons where growth came quickly and others where I had to adapt, rethink my strategy, and find new opportunities to keep moving forward.
One lesson I’ve learned is that success isn’t about avoiding setbacks, it’s about staying persistent. Every obstacle has pushed me to become more creative, whether that meant expanding into meal prep, growing our corporate catering services, building relationships with local businesses, or exploring new opportunities like retail partnerships and government contracts.
The biggest challenge has often been balancing the demands of entrepreneurship with family life. Building a business requires sacrifice, but my family has always been my greatest motivation. They remind me why I started this journey in the first place.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the difficult moments because they forced me to grow. Every challenge has made Paz Salsa stronger, and each one has reinforced my belief that with hard work, adaptability, and a commitment to quality, it’s possible to build something meaningful from the ground up.
As you know, we’re big fans of Paz Salsa Catering & Meal Prep. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Paz Salsa is more than a catering company, it’s a family-owned business built on authentic recipes, hard work, and a passion for bringing people together through food. We specialize in fresh Mexican meal prep, corporate catering, private events, and family-style catering throughout the Phoenix area.
Everything we serve is prepared from scratch using quality ingredients and recipes that have been passed down through generations. While we’re proud of our authentic flavors, we’ve also evolved to meet the needs of today’s customers by offering macro-friendly meal prep that proves healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring. Our goal has always been to create food that is both nutritious and something people genuinely look forward to eating.
Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of serving healthcare organizations, law firms, schools, businesses, fitness communities, and countless families celebrating life’s special moments. Whether we’re preparing dozens of weekly meals or catering a large corporate event, we approach every order with the same attention to quality and service.
What truly sets Paz Salsa apart is the personal connection we build with our customers. We’re not a national chain or a franchise, we know many of our customers by name, listen to their feedback, and continually improve our menu based on their needs. That commitment to relationships has allowed our business to grow primarily through word-of-mouth referrals and repeat customers.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that we’ve built Paz Salsa on trust. People trust us to feed their families each week, cater their weddings and celebrations, and provide meals for their employees and clients. That’s a responsibility we never take for granted.
As we continue to grow, our vision is to make authentic Mexican meal prep and catering more accessible across Arizona through innovation, strategic partnerships, and continued investment in our business. No matter how much we grow, our mission will remain the same: to serve great food, treat people like family, and create memorable experiences one meal at a time.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is growing up in my family’s restaurant. My dad owned the restaurant, and I remember spending countless hours there watching everyone work together. My grandmother was in the kitchen, my mom and sisters were always busy helping, and my dad seemed to know everyone who walked through the door.
Meanwhile, I was the kid playing with my Power Rangers in the corner, taking it all in without realizing how much those moments would shape me. Looking back, I can still remember the sounds of the kitchen, the conversations, the energy, and the sense of community that came from sharing a meal.
At the time, it just felt like home. Today, I realize those experiences planted the seed for what would eventually become Paz Salsa. The restaurant industry, the hustle, and the joy of bringing people together through food have always been a part of my life. In many ways, building Paz Salsa feels like carrying on that family tradition in my own way.
