Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilizabeth Birk.
Hi Marilizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into founding my psychiatric medication management and therapy practice began with a deep, lifelong curiosity and a genuine passion for learning—coupled with a strong desire to make a meaningful difference for the children in our community. I have always believed that children are our future, and if we do not support them now, our world will ultimately suffer the consequences. This belief has guided every step of my career from nursing assistant to psychiatric nurse and elementary school nurse to psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.
From the beginning, I knew I wanted to specialize in working with children, adolescents, and young adults. I created a warm, welcoming environment where not only children, but individuals in their twenties, thirties, or forties could feel safe and supported. One of the elements I’m most proud of is incorporating my therapy dogs into sessions. Their gentle presence helps create a comfortable space, allowing individuals who might otherwise struggle to open up to do so more naturally through the unconditional love and comfort that only an animal can provide.
As a parent myself, I bring a personal understanding of the joys and challenges of raising children, which deepens my empathy and informs how I approach treatment for children and for my patients that are parents. Over the years, my practice has grown and evolved. We moved our office three times before finally finding the perfect space—one that truly reflects the calm, nurturing atmosphere our young patients and their families deserve.
Today, the practice stands as a place where mental health journeys are honored with compassion, expertise, and hope.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting and building a specialized psychiatric medication management and therapy practice came with several meaningful obstacles. One of the biggest challenges was finding and creating the right physical environment. We relocated our office three times before discovering a space that felt truly right—one that could support the calm, child-friendly, and therapeutic atmosphere essential for young patients to feel safe and open.
Another significant hurdle was assembling the right team. Building a group of truly supportive, skilled, and compassionate individuals who share the same vision and values proved more difficult than I initially expected. It took time, patience, and discernment to find the right people who would genuinely enhance the care we provide.
I also learned that the success of a practice depends heavily on the fit with the patients and families we serve. Not every match is the right one, and learning to navigate those dynamics while staying true to our mission required ongoing reflection and adjustment.
Despite these challenges, each obstacle became an opportunity to refine our approach and strengthen our commitment to providing exceptional, personalized care.
As you know, we’re big fans of Summit Mental Health & Wellness PLLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I provide compassionate psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and supportive brief therapy for children (starting at age 3), adolescents, and adults in a warm, welcoming environment. My practice focuses on helping people navigate mental health challenges with individualized, evidence-based care. I am especially passionate about creating a comfortable space for children and adolescents, often incorporating my therapy dogs to help patients feel safe and open during sessions. The practice is dedicated exclusively to individual care—no family or couples counseling is offered—so that each patient receives focused, personalized attention tailored to their unique needs and journey.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Through the process of starting and growing this practice, I’ve learned several profound lessons that continue to shape how I work and lead.
First, I’ve learned that the right environment is absolutely vital. The physical space, the emotional tone, and even the presence of my therapy dogs all play a powerful role in helping children feel comfortable enough to engage in meaningful therapy. A nurturing setting can make all the difference in a child’s ability to heal and grow.
Second, I’ve discovered that surrounding yourself with the right people—caring, aligned, and dedicated team members—is essential to building something sustainable and truly impactful. Finding those individuals can be a challenge, but once you do, everything becomes stronger and more fulfilling.
Third, I’ve learned that the right patients and families truly make the best practice. When there is a genuine connection and a shared commitment to the mental health journey, the work becomes deeply rewarding for everyone involved. I take great joy in walking alongside children, adolescents, and young adults as they make progress, build resilience, and move toward brighter futures.
Finally, as both a clinician and a parent, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of patience, empathy, and individualized care. Every person’s story is unique, and the most effective support comes from meeting them exactly where they are—with compassion, expertise, and the understanding that healing takes time.
These lessons have not only strengthened the practice but have also reinforced my original passion: supporting the next generations so they can thrive.
I’ve learned that building a practice is not just about clinical skill—it’s about creating a community of care where trust, consistency, and genuine connection flourish.
