Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Field.
Hi Greg, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I hit the ground running in 2008 when the economy was tanking. I launched PGT Home Energy Solutions focusing on the grit of building science—things like duct sealing, insulation, and solar hot water. By 2009, I had fully integrated home solar into my skill set. I spent years in attics and on rooftops across the Valley, mastering how to make a house actually survive a 115-degree Arizona summer. It wasn’t until 2016 that I decided to bring all that technical knowledge to the real estate side with HomeSmart. Now, I don’t just walk clients through a house to look at the kitchen. I’m auditing the thermal envelope and checking the solar orientation before they ever sign a contract. I’ve spent nearly two decades navigating SRP and APS rate hikes, and that perspective allows me to treat a home as a high-performance asset rather than just a place to park a car. It’s been 18 years of figuring out the Arizona market from the inside out, and I’m still out there making sure my clients don’t get burned by the desert sun or a bad utility bill.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth is the last word I would use to describe the path since 2008. Starting a business centered on energy efficiency right as the housing market collapsed in the Valley was a massive gamble. I spent those early years convincing people to spend money on their attics and ductwork when most families were just trying to keep their keys. Then, adding solar in 2009 brought its own set of headaches because the technology and the incentives were moving targets. I had to become a pseudo-expert in utility law just to explain the latest SRP or APS rate changes to my clients. When I transitioned into real estate in 2016, the challenge was proving to the industry that a realtor with a background in building science wasn’t just a niche specialist but a necessity in a desert climate. I’ve had to fight against the generic real estate mindset that ignores how a house actually performs. Dealing with the logistics of running PGT while maintaining a high-volume real estate career means I’m basically always on, but those 18 years of grit are exactly what allow me to protect my clients today from the mistakes everyone else is making.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
PGT Home Energy Solutions isn’t in the business of just slapping as many panels as possible on a roof. We’ve evolved past the old solar-only model because, frankly, the utility companies changed the rules. The sell-back rates from SRP and APS are so low now that oversizing a system just to export excess power for wholesale pennies is a losing game. Instead, we specialize in designing smarter, surgical peak shaving systems. We don’t want you exporting your power; we want you consuming it. This is why a battery is no longer an optional add-on—it’s the engine of the entire system. By integrating tech like the Powerwall 3, we can store your solar energy and use it to kill those expensive late peak hours. It’s about rate arbitrage and protecting our clients from demand charges. We are known for this high-level engineering that treats your home like a mini-utility. I’m most proud that we’ve stayed ahead of the curve since 2008, moving from basic efficiency to sophisticated energy management. I want readers to know that at PGT, we don’t just sell equipment; we provide a defense strategy against the rising costs of living in the Arizona desert.
What makes you happy?
Professionally, nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing a client’s face when they realize we’ve essentially outsmarted the utility companies. After 18 years in the Valley, watching a homeowner take control of their $500 summer bill with a system that actually performs is why I do this. It’s that win for the consumer that keeps me motivated.
On a personal level, I’m happiest when I’m off the grid for a bit. Whether it’s hitting the wine trails in Napa Valley or escaping the 115-degree Tempe heat for the cooler air in Tahoe City, those moments of reset are vital. I’ve always been drawn to great culinary and cultural experiences—diving into a food tour in Mexico City or just finding a killer new spot in the Valley for a post-closing meal. I also find a lot of peace in staying active and exploring deeper topics, from spiritual growth to the latest political commentary. At the end of the day, it’s about that balance: grinding through the technical complexities of Arizona energy during the week and finding those quiet, high-quality moments with Cheryl and the family when the sun finally goes down.
