Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Kwan.
Hi Alexis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am an Arizona native, born and raised in Scottsdale. Growing up, some of my fondest memories are ones at Dim Sum with my family or eating my mom’s home cooking. My first job in high school was actually as a hostess in a restaurant and there, I became a master at describing each dish to be mouthwatering and making recommendations to strangers that needed assistance. Food and the food community have always been a part of my life. My internship with Fox Restaurant Concepts during college truly showed me that I have a knack for telling stories, writing copy, describing food, and creating engaging content. Here I was able to work on projects that combined my love for food with business marketing, specifically social media. It wasn’t until I graduated college into the pandemic (class of 2020) with a degree in Political Science and no job prospects on the horizon that I decided to take my business more seriously. I took freelancing gigs whenever I could for local restaurants and began taking photos to highlight my favorite food spots to highlight them on my own Instagram. Now, I’m a graduate student at Thunderbird, pursuing my master in Global Business Management while simultaneously starting my own social media marketing agency.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Graduating into the COVID-19 pandemic was probably one of the most pivotal hurdles I’ve gone through for my business. It most likely would not exist if not for the pandemic. I had grand plans to backpack around the world after my undergraduate graduation and instead, I found myself living at my mom’s place for months, jobless, and uncertain about my future. I still have those dreams, but now I’ll be achieving them in a slightly different way. Instead of traveling off of my savings, I’ll be working hard for the next year or so while I finish grad school to myself up as a digital nomad once I graduate.

How do you think about happiness?
Experiences. Trying new restaurants, live music, celebrating friends’ successes, music, dancing around, art, the process of creating.
