Cody Silva shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Cody , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
Funny thing is, most people aren’t really running from failure, they’re running from being their true genuine self. Because someone’s judgment—whether it’s a random comment, a family member, a spouse, or even someone who gave up on their own dreams—convinced them to dim their light. Don’t let their failures dictate your future. Go for yours, because it’s yours. Keep going!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
First and foremost, my name is Cody — though most know me as Fresh C, Retro, or Quixxotik. I wear a lot of hats, but at the heart of it all, I’m a full-time musician, singer-songwriter, producer, retro gamer, streamer, and even a video game store owner. What makes my journey unique is that I don’t just create music — I create soundtracks for people’s lives. Whether it’s through deep, raw lyrics or immersive production, my work is built to connect with people on a real level.
I produce scores for video games, commercials, and collaborate with other like-minded artists, but more than that, I pour my energy into music that speaks to the struggles, triumphs, and stories we all live. Originally from California and now based in Arizona, my background as a former fireman, EMT, and lifelong community activist has shaped how I see the world. I coach underprivileged kids for free, support local causes, and give back without cameras rolling, because authenticity matters to me.
My brand isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about creating a culture where music, retro nostalgia, and community collide. It’s art with purpose — whether that’s on stage, behind the mic, in the game store, or out in the neighborhood making a difference.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was never supposed to be here — alive, successful, or thriving. From the very beginning, every obstacle imaginable was thrown at me. I’ve walked through stages of death, health battles, and losses that could’ve broken me. But I never conformed to what anyone else wanted me to be. I became what I wanted to be — a maverick, pulling myself up by my own bootstraps and surviving the flames of life.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No, I never gave up — but had I, nobody would have questioned it. The pinnacle life changes for me were my near-death experiences between the ages of 9 and 14. Those specific years shaped my strength, surviving everything from drive-by shootings, to car accidents, to poverty, and carrying an intense amount of stress at such an early age. It changes you drastically.
Relocating later in life brought a whole different pressure — going from looking over my shoulder and struggling just to get by, to a place with white picket fences, smiles, and laughter. But being so colorful, artistic, and different also alienated me. Those struggles became more mental than physical. And when I later faced the deaths of my mother, my best friend, and even my dog, the weight of it all could have broken me.
But instead, it built resilience. Every trial, every loss, every change has shaped who I am today. My scars tell a story of survival, and my resilience is proof that giving up was never an option.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m fully committed to building my retro gaming community — no matter how long it takes. Unlike my music and production career, which can be demanding and stressful, retro gaming is pure joy. It’s fun, it’s nostalgic, and it gives me back a kind of life that music rarely does outside of my passion and my fans. It’s a feeling you really have to experience and respect to understand.
The retro gaming community has brought so much light back into my world, and I’m dedicated to growing it with every stream I do and every time I open the doors to my game store. This isn’t just a project for me — it’s a lifelong commitment to something that keeps me grounded, inspired, and connected.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes — I’ve been doing that my whole life. Truthfully, I rarely get any praise for anything I’ve done, major or minor. But that was never the mission. I’m a pioneer in music and beyond, and I love seeing my ideas take shape and inspire other artists, creators, people, and businesses. I’ve always seen myself as a vessel, a light for those who don’t have one. That’s the motivation.
Take all the credit — I couldn’t care less. I know I designed a blueprint that many have followed, and many more will follow when I’m gone. I’m a one of one, doing what I do simply because I love it, not for praise or a pat on the back. If I was waiting for that, I would’ve quit a long time ago — lol
