Check Out Nicole Moran’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Moran.

Hi Nicole, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Guanajuato Capital, Mexico, and since I was younger, I’ve always been drawn to photography and creativity.

I loved documenting things, experimenting with light, movement, emotion!
I was and still am the type of person constantly carrying a camera around just because I never wanted to miss the feeling of a moment.

I actually found my way into the wedding industry in a very unexpected and organic way. Years ago, I became part of a floral team that specialized in weddings and events, and being surrounded by that environment completely changed something in me creatively. Every time we finished setting up a wedding, after hours of florals, candles, textures, tablescapes, and all the little details coming together, I would just stand there in awe of how beautiful and emotional everything felt. There was something so powerful about seeing people pour their hearts into creating a space for such an important moment in someone’s life.

Without fully realizing it at first, I slowly started bringing photography into that world. In the beginning, I photographed flowers and decor setups, then details, then couples, and eventually full weddings. Little by little, photography became more than just something I loved, it became the way I connected with people and told stories.

I spent years intentionally building a portfolio and developing a style that felt true to me emotionally and artistically, always dreaming that one day it could open doors beyond my hometown. Eventually, that path led me to New York City, and now, six years later, I’m incredibly grateful to say I’ve built a career here as a documentary wedding photographer.

What I love most about weddings is how human they are. Every couple, every family, every culture, every story is completely different, and this career has opened my eyes in so many ways. It has allowed me to meet incredible people, experience traditions from all over the world, and witness such honest and emotional moments that stay with me long after the wedding day is over.

Photography continues to challenge and inspire me creatively all the time, and I think that’s one of the reasons I still feel so passionate about it. I genuinely love creating images that feel timeless and emotional, photographs that allow people to not only remember how everything looked, but how it truly felt to live it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. Moving from Mexico to New York City and trying to build a creative career from the ground up was honestly one of the biggest leaps of faith I’ve ever taken.
Starting over in a completely new city, especially one as fast-paced and competitive as NYC came with a lot of uncertainty, self-doubt, and moments where I questioned if I was truly capable of making space for myself in such a saturated industry.

One of the biggest challenges was learning how to trust my own artistic voice while constantly being surrounded by comparison, trends, and the pressure to create work that “fits” what the industry expects.
For a long time, I struggled with balancing the emotional, documentary side of photography that naturally inspired me with the polished editorial world that weddings often demand.

Over time, though, I realized the beauty of my work came from allowing those two things to coexist authentically.
Another challenge was simply learning how to run a business while also being an artist. As creatives, we often focus so much on the passion behind what we do that we underestimate everything else involved, communication, client experience, networking, long hours, burnout, traveling, constantly adapting, and learning how to sustain yourself creatively without losing the love for it.

There were definitely moments where things felt overwhelming, especially in the beginning, but looking back now, I think those experiences shaped me not only as a photographer, but as a person. They taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of creating from a genuine place instead of trying to imitate anyone else.

I think that’s also why I connect so deeply with weddings and human stories today. At the end of the day, photography became much more than creating beautiful images for me, it became a way to connect, observe, feel, and preserve emotions in a way that feels honest and lasting.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a documentary wedding photographer based in New York City, specializing in emotionally driven imagery with an editorial and artistic approach. My work focuses on capturing weddings in a way that feels honest, timeless, and deeply connected to the real emotions of the day rather than overly posed moments.

I’m especially inspired by human connection, movement, atmosphere, architecture, fashion, florals, and all the small in-between moments that often become the most meaningful memories. I love creating photographs that not only look beautiful, but truly make people feel something when they see them years later.

Over the years, many couples have told me that my work feels very emotional and cinematic while still remaining refined and elegant, and I think that balance is what naturally sets my approach apart. My background working around floral and event design also shaped the way I visually experience weddings and helped me develop a strong attention to detail and storytelling.

What I’m most proud of is the trust my couples place in me. Being able to document such meaningful moments and create images that become part of someone’s family history is something I genuinely value and never take for granted.

What are your plans for the future?
Honestly, one of my biggest goals moving forward is continuing to grow in a way that feels intentional both creatively and personally. I want to keep evolving my work artistically, pushing myself creatively, and documenting weddings in a way that continues to feel honest, emotional, and timeless no matter how much the industry changes.

I’m also very excited about expanding more into destination weddings and having the opportunity to document celebrations all around the world. One of my favorite parts of this career has always been discovering different cultures, traditions, and ways people experience love and connection. I would love to continue capturing unique stories through my own perspective and creating imagery that feels deeply personal no matter where in the world I am.

Another big goal of mine is beginning to create workshops and educational spaces for photographers who are trying to grow within the wedding industry and discover their own creative voice. Throughout my journey, I’ve learned so much through experience, challenges, and trial and error, and I would genuinely love to share more of my process with others in a way that feels supportive, inspiring, and honest. I think having guidance and encouragement can completely change someone’s confidence creatively, and being able to help other photographers discover their own potential is something that really excites me for the future.

More than anything, I hope to continue creating work that moves people emotionally while continuing to grow, evolve, and stay inspired with every story I get to document.
