Today we’d like to introduce you to Branden Davis-Butler.
Hi Branden, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first stepped into audiobook narration with a love for audiobooks and a curiosity about voice work. What began as a small side project for an author friend of mine quickly became a passion.
I took the time to hone my craft through coaching, technical training, practice, and tackling a variety of genres, learning how to bring each author’s words to life. Over time, I’ve built relationships with production houses and authors, expanding my portfolio and refining my style. I spent time working as the Head of Production for Dark Star Romance, an audiobook production company, and learned more about the industry than I ever would have as just a narrator. I’ve been a key speaker at events that educate authors on the various things to know when considering having an audiobook done and that teach newer narrators the nuances of narrating.
Today, I’ve narrated numerous titles, each one a new opportunity to connect with listeners and share stories in a way that feels both intimate and alive.
In addition, I also co-host a bookish podcast – Blush Podcast – where we interview authors, narrators, book influencers, and do book reviews.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. In the beginning, I had to learn the technical side of recording from scratch – microphones, software, editing – while also developing my narration skills. Early on, I faced the challenge of finding consistent work and proving myself in a competitive, saturated industry. There were long hours, tight deadlines, and moments of self-doubt, but each project taught me something new.
I’ve also had to overcome personal hurdles along the way. It’s easy to compare yourself to other narrators, but doing so can tempt you to imitate their style instead of staying true to your own. And imposter syndrome is very real—learning to quiet that inner voice insisting your work isn’t good enough is essential, or it will consume you.
One of my biggest obstacles came when my home was hit by an F3 tornado, causing significant damage. The repairs took nearly a year and a half, and the constant construction noise made recording nearly impossible. Having to tell rights holders I couldn’t meet deadlines – and not knowing when I’d be able to start again – was incredibly disheartening. I truly worried it might end my career.
But over time, I learned to balance performance with production, built a strong professional network, and developed the resilience to keep moving forward, even when the path was uncertain.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an audiobook narrator who specializes in bringing stories to life through authentic, emotionally connected performances. I work across a variety of genres – everything from heartfelt romance to gripping thrillers – but I’m especially drawn to character-driven narratives where I can fully inhabit the emotional landscape of the story.
I’m known for my ability to convey nuance, making each character distinct while keeping the pacing and tone true to the author’s vision. I take pride in delivering clean, production-ready audio that not only meets technical standards but also captures the heart of the story.
What I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built with authors, publishers, and listeners. Many of my collaborations have grown into long-term partnerships, which to me is the greatest compliment.
What sets me apart is the additional value I bring to authors: production company experience, publishing knowledge, promotional content creation, a background in social media marketing, and a balance of artistry and professionalism. I bring genuine passion to each project while remaining highly organized, communicative, and committed to deadlines. I approach each book as if it were my own, and I believe that level of care is something listeners can hear in the final performance.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that success in audiobook narration is as much about resilience as it is about talent. There will always be challenges – technical issues, unexpected life events, industry shifts – but how you adapt and keep moving forward makes the difference. I’ve learned to trust my own voice, literally and figuratively, rather than getting lost in comparison to others. And I’ve learned that building strong, respectful relationships with authors, publishers, and fellow narrators is just as vital as delivering a great performance – because this industry thrives on trust, collaboration, and authenticity.
