We recently had the chance to connect with Brent Bond and have shared our conversation below.
Brent, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. When was the last time you felt true joy?
I am extremely fortunate that I feel true joy on a regular basis. I’m a somewhat recently self taught harmonica player and percussionist and play a couple gigs per week with a band called The Dusty Ramblers Project. The endorphins released playing music with talented friends feeds me in so many ways. Couple that with having found someone late in life that fills your thoughts during the waking hours and your dreams as you sleep and it’s hard not to encounter joy on a regular basis.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
When people ask me what I do I often reply “What do you need done?”. A broad skill set helps keep me self employed as an artist, musician, print publisher, Master Printer, furniture designer, custom fabricator and design consultant. I do work for the man a bit, teaching a printmaking class one semester a year at Mesa Community College. As the owner and operator of Santo Press, a fine art publishing company specializing in relief printing, I collaborate with artists to create limited edition originals. Since founding the company in May of ’09 I have worked with 56 artists to create 325 print editions. The archival impression from each numbered edition goes to Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum for their public collection. With Handufactured by Brent Bond, the moniker used on my furniture, I provide collaborative design and fabrication of custom pieces for both private and corporate clients. As one of five members of the Americana outfit The Dusty Ramblers Project I help keep the beat with cajon and shakers and add some flourishes and solos on harmonica.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I see the world with eyes full of gratitude. It’s taken close to 60 years but I have found peace of mind and an easily manageable level of stress. I attribute both to a recalibrating of my priorities that occurred after my youngest son’s two bone marrow transplants.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Stop smoking and drinking already.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Parenthood! I have two sons, one 14 and another 25. If you can’t be committed to a life long project like that I suggest never starting one.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
Without a doubt while hiking. The combination of exercise and nature has the ability to both ground and recharge me in a way that other things don’t.
