Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Brown.
Suzanne, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always created some art work, starting with painting and moving on to the textile art of quilting. My quilts were many times picture quilts depicting flowers and landscapes reflecting my rural heritage.
I have entered national and regional contests winning honors with several different quilts the greatest honor was winning the Kansas division of The Great American Quilt contest sponsored by the American Folk-Art Museum and 3M.
The intricate piecing and color variations of my quilts have provided a natural transition to the stones, gems and colored metals I use in my jewelry. I have always been drawn to colors and shapes so my jewelry reflects the images of the world.
I have taken wide and various classes in metal smithing, including piercing, wire working, bezel setting, gold and argentium fusion, as well as steel and gold fusion.
Because of my fascination with stones, I have taken GIA certified classes in Diamonds and Colored Stones. All of these classes have brought diversity and creativity to my designs.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create wearable art that reflect the customer’s personality. I make bracelets, earrings, pendants, and necklaces. I love using unique stones and techniques to create one-of-a-kind designs. I first purchase stones from the lapidary dealers who cut the stones. I only purchase stones that are unique either in color or shape. That is the element that dictates my design. I then lay the pieces out and add metal and sometimes more stones that have a pop of color or sparkle to carry out my vision. After that, it is sawing, hammering, and soldering to put the piece together. Then, on to polishing to finish the piece before setting the stones. A final polish and the piece are ready for the customer. I want my customers to feel they have chosen a special piece that is a handmade piece of art.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
