Art & Life with Katelyn Block

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Block.

Katelyn, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in Scottsdale and now live in Gilbert with my husband, Casey and our three kids. I am currently working as a food and health blogger, food stylist, and essential oil distributor. I also have a passion for design, photography, and videography. When I am not exploring my many passions or doing typical Mom stuff, I am in the kitchen cooking.

Food and cooking have always been a passion of mine. Growing up I loved helping my mom in the kitchen. While my brother and sister were watching their favorite sitcoms, I was always tuned into the Food Network. In high school and college, I would cook meals for my friends and roommates. Now, as a wife and mom I enjoy making healthy meals for my family.

In 2014, my health hit a low and doctor after doctor wanted to put me on medication without discovering the reason for any of my symptoms. That’s when I found a naturopathic doctor and everything changed. I began cleansing on a strict diet along with different detoxing herbal supplements. Within a few weeks almost all of the symptoms that were heavily affecting my life were gone! It has been since then that our whole family has made changes to what we eat and how we care for our bodies. We follow a Paleo diet most of the time, however sometimes our meals are simply gluten and dairy free. Other times we splurge a little and remember that experiencing life with others involves giving ourselves a little grace to enjoy certain foods! My eyes have been opened to how our food is directly related to our health and I am passionate about sharing my journey with others!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art is creating, styling, and photographing healthy food that is nourishing and healing for our bodies. Sharing healthy recipes and lifestyle tips brings me great joy because I have experienced first-hand how it can change lives! I am passionate about helping others discover the positive changes it can have for them and their families. Everyone’s health journey is their own, no one should feel pressure to make their story look like someone else’s, it needs to work and fit their lifestyle.

I always hope that my images inspire others. Cooking, styling, and photography are things that I love to do, so taking pictures of certain meals comes pretty easily to me, but I am always looking to improve my skills. Many of my images are taken just before sitting down to eat a meal together as a family. I typically style one plate for an image how I want it, when I serve my family their meal it doesn’t look that way. For example, for my 6-year-old daughter it’s on a Hello Kitty plate, not perfectly placed, no garnish, and no perfectly sliced avocado, because that’s real life!

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I believe that artists have such a great opportunity to share a purpose behind their work. I love seeing small businesses succeed and supported through social media platforms that allow them to share their story and purpose. When people can connect and relate with someone’s story, they want to be a part of it and support it!

As someone that is passionate about healthy foods and a healthy lifestyle, I feel concerned about many of today’s issues such as; GMO’s, food and product labeling, artificial ingredients, and government regulations. I desire to bring awareness around many of these topics and help to educate people in making the right choices for a healthy lifestyle.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I share my recipes, food styling, and healthy living tips on my social media platforms as well as my blog. You can find me on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. I would love and appreciate the support of others by following along and I am always looking to collaborate with like-minded people!
