We’re looking forward to introducing you to Thomas Uli. Check out our conversation below.
Thomas, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
I usually start my day early and head straight to the pharmacy, where I typically work a 12-hour shift. On shorter days, I’ll 100% hit the gym—either before or after work. I aim for at least four workouts a week. Otherwise, I spend the evening having dinner with my fiancé and working on Vanguard projects. I usually wind down by gaming or catching up with friends online before calling it a night.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Thomas, a pharmacist by trade and the founder of Vanguard Apparel, a company built around discipline, self improvement, and community. It has grown to provide high quality activewear and nutritional supplements for individuals committed to bettering themselves. What makes Vanguard unique is our focus on the meaning behind the product. Whether it is a shirt or a supplement, it represents a commitment to becoming sharper, stronger, and more capable both in and out of the gym. At Vanguard, we are dedicated to empowering leadership in individuals from all walks of life. Our mission is to inspire a mindset of growth, resilience, and purpose, fostering the qualities essential for effective leadership — honor, loyalty, commitment, self accountability, and bravery.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work is my dad. He’s the youngest of seven and a natural athlete. Growing up, he worked hard to improve himself intellectually while staying physically fit and competing in team sports. However, instead of pursuing athletics as a career, he moved to Arizona and chose to focus on the emerging field of computer programming. He built a successful life here and, with my mother, raised me and my sister in a comfortable lifestyle. He instilled strong morals and a solid work ethic in me, always encouraging me to keep pushing myself to get better in every part of life.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Certainly. There have been times with relationships, pharmacy school, fitness goals, and building Vanguard Apparel when the challenges felt overwhelming, and giving up seemed like an option. But my dad always taught me that anything truly worth building is worth fighting for. That lesson has stuck with me—reminding me to push through the hard times because the things that matter most deserve the effort and perseverance to keep them alive.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I believe fads don’t truly improve the lives of those who follow them, while foundational shifts do just that—they create real, lasting change. I see fads more as entertainment, a way for people to feel part of something quirky or fun. That’s not to say fads are bad, but I don’t think they represent something that will have a meaningful or lasting impact.
When it comes to clothing, I think this distinction really shows up in the styling of graphic apparel and design. The fashion industry is full of fads—trends that come and go quickly without lasting impact. People often buy into these trends because they’re fun or quirky, but they rarely offer real value over time.
Vanguard, on the other hand, represents a foundational shift. Yes, we sell products, but our priority is the benefit of our community’s lives. We focus on meaning and purpose, not just style or trends. Our goal is to create apparel and supplements that support growth, resilience, and leadership, making a lasting impact beyond the surface.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
There are very few things I regret not doing because I have made pursuing the things I might regret missing the very purpose of my life. I’ve lived this through the education I’ve sought, the things I buy, starting a company, getting engaged, joining fraternities and organizations—you name it. I don’t have to live with the fear of missing out because I’ve made it a priority to go after what interests me. Our time is limited, and in the midst of busy lives, it’s important to make the most of it by fully engaging with what matters to us.
