An Inspired Chat with Stephen Moody of Scottsdale

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Stephen Moody. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Stephen, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’m not wandering, I’m running down a path, driven by a purpose I’ve felt since childhood. My mother always said my guardian angel protected me through three near-death experiences before I was 11, insisting I was spared for something great. That belief, whether instilled by her or born in me, fuels everything I do.

Yet, I wrestle with feeling insignificant, like my work doesn’t matter in the grand scheme. That tension is my fire. It’s why I paint, write novels, and juggle a 40-hour work week without missing a beat. People ask how I find the time, and I tell them: I don’t have a choice. This drive to create, to leave a mark, gets me out of bed every morning. I’m not strolling or drifting, I’m charging toward something bigger, even if I’m still discovering what it is.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist who weaves stories through paint, words, and sound. My creative journey began with professional photography – portraits, commercial work, and writing for professional photography magazines, before I traded my camera for a paintbrush.

Now, I create vibrant oil paintings that capture lasting emotion, unlike the photographs I once produced. Four years ago, spurred by my girlfriend’s encouragement, I wrote my first novel, which hit #1 in its Amazon category for a weekend. To date, I’ve published two novels, a fine art coffee table book, and two audiobooks, with three more novels in editing and another in progress.

My brand is about transforming fleeting moments into enduring art, whether on canvas or in stories. I’m also producing my own audiobooks, inspired by a chance encounter at Sony Records that pushed me to explore my voice. I’m excited to keep creating, blending visual and narrative art to inspire others.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
As a child, I was a devout follower, shaped by a deeply religious family where faith dictated my every choice.

At 30, I began questioning beliefs that no longer rang true, breaking free from that rigid world. The cost was steep, lifelong friends turned away, but the freedom was worth it.

Over the next decade, I embraced my true self: a fearless artist driven by passion, not dogma. This liberation fuels my paintings, novels, and audiobooks, where I pour my soul into stories of love, struggle, and redemption. I’m no longer bound by who I was told to be; I’m a creator forging my own path, crafting art that reflects my hard-won authenticity.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When three major photography contracts totaling over six-figures collapsed within 24 hours, followed by the closure of the gallery showcasing my paintings, I was shattered.

Reeling from rejection and doubting my path, I nearly walked away from my creative career. But surrender isn’t in me. I rose, driven by an unshakable need to create, and poured that grit into my art. Each setback fuels my vision, pushing me to craft paintings, novels like my Amazon #1 bestseller, and audiobooks that weave love, struggle, and redemption.

My mission: to blend visual art and storytelling into something timeless – grows fiercer with every hurdle, driving me to create with relentless heart.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say I’m driven by an unquenchable need to create. They see me lost in my studio, painting with vibrant oils that capture raw emotion, or hunched over my laptop, crafting novels. To them, creation isn’t just what I do, it’s who I am. Whether I’m plotting a new storyline for my next novel, or producing audiobooks that breathe life into my words, friends know every brushstroke and sentence is a piece of my soul.

They’d also say my spiritual core is inseparable from my art. Friends tease me about my pilgrimages to Sedona, where I meditate on vortexes, feeling the earth’s energy recharge my creative spark. They’ve seen me at retreats, realigning my chakras to find clarity, or practicing Tai Chi at dawn to center my mind. These rituals aren’t just habits; they’re the foundation of my work.

Before a painting takes shape or a story unfolds, it exists in my spirit, shaped by quiet moments of reflection.
Friends notice that setbacks, like a gallery closing or a rejected manuscript, only deepen my resolve. They’d tell you I turn pain into art, transforming doubt into vivid canvases or stories of love, struggle, and redemption. My vision is to weave visual art and narrative into something timeless, a mission that grows stronger with every challenge. They see me chase this with a relentless heart, whether I’m layering colors on a canvas or recording an audiobook’s final take.

To my friends, what matters most is my unwavering commitment to creating beauty and meaning, fueled by a soul in tune with the world.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say I was a creator who never surrendered. Friends and family will tell of a man who faced countless setbacks; photography contracts collapsing overnight, galleries closing their doors, yet rose each time, brush or pen in hand, to chase his purpose. They’ll recall late nights in my studio, painting canvases that pulse with color and emotion, or crafting novels, weaving tales of love, struggle, and redemption. They’ll speak of audiobooks I poured my voice into, bringing stories to life despite rejections that stung.

My children and grandchildren will share how I lived for passion, showing them that purpose is worth every sacrifice. They’ll say I saw life as a vast puzzle, each of us a unique piece with a mission to fulfill. I believe we’re here to learn, to grow through pain, to create something lasting. When a gallery turned me away, I painted bolder works; when a manuscript was rejected, I wrote stories that burned brighter. These challenges, though painful, sharpened my resolve to leave a mark.

I want my story to inspire others to embrace their destiny, to see rejection as a lesson, not a defeat. Life is a school, and growth demands resilience, facing closed doors, dusting off doubt, and creating anyway. My legacy, I hope, will be one of unyielding heart: a painter, writer, and storyteller who transformed setbacks into art that speaks of human struggle and triumph. I want people to say I filled my piece of the world’s puzzle, urging others to do the same, leaving no dream unfulfilled, no purpose unmet.
