An Inspired Chat with Savannah Visser of Dewey, AZ

We recently had the chance to connect with Savannah Visser and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Savannah, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I have always been called to help others, but now more than ever, I am being called to help myself.
A few months ago, my fiance and I were surprised with the news of a baby! A few weeks ago, we learned that we are having twins (holy … you know what hah).
I knew I would need to take a step back from normalcy, but now, with the knowledge of twins and the pregnancy pushing on beautifully, I feel immense pressure to prepare myself to take time away from work, relinquish daily tasks, and focus on my personal preparation and healing both physically and mentally — which scares me to death. I feel out of control and have had to cope with concentrating on filling my cup, so I can better stand with my partner and fill the cups of two little ones being brought into our world. It may sound like a silly fear, but helping others throughout all aspects of my life runs through veins, it’s easy for me…focusing on myself and taking time away from current responsibilities feels foreign. As an entrepreneur, I’m a workaholic, like most others I know. So! It is time for a new job, I guess. Wish me luck!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Savannah Rose Visser and I am an Expert Brand Designer who has run my own freelance business since 2019. I have always liked unique experiences, for every day to be a little different, and the idea of building my own freedom through work. Currently, I am working with 6 different clients varying from single entrepreneurs to companies with 100+ workers on projects that continue to build their brand presence and make their hard work shine!

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I could never lead. I was always told I had smarts, creativity, and promise…but I was shy, soft-spoke, and never really let my opinion shine. Little did others know, I was soaking it all in, listening carefully, and observing others rights, wrongs, and in-betweens. I was always learning and continue to due so.
I did believe people that used to say, “oh you should create this…but you’ll need a partner” or “you’d make a great captain, but maybe you can co-captain with so-and-so.”
It took me a while to get frustrated enough to make it a priority to prove them wrong. But truly, in the back of my mind…no matter how scared I was to act alone, I knew I could lead in many ways. I went on to be the captain of my college dance team, the leader of my own entrepreneurial career, and the creator of a few brands. I honestly, don’t think my leadership journey is done — I believe it has just begun.
Also…I think some people confuse leadership with having to “rule alone”. Whereas, I take it as guiding thoughtful collaboration.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Fairly recently, I was starting a project for a new start-up that I was stoked about. I was jazzed all the way through research, ideation, and creation of directional draft stages for the look of this new brand. And right when I turned in my first presentation proposal, I immediately started regretting every choice I had made. Questioning my own self-worth — who am I to give them options for how their entire brand will look for eternity? Do I even have enough skills or experience? And that third page…what is that? Why was that even an option?

I felt that way for a week, thinking I should apologize, give them a refund and pack up the project.

To quote Hermione Granger, “What. An. Idiot.”

Took me a second, but I re-centered myself, re-examined why I made the choices I did, and re-assured myself that they hired me for a reason. They liked my design process and how I thought of bringing their brain-child to life visually.

Sometimes it takes a moment, but always know that if you work mindfully, there should be no reason to doubt yourself. Questioning is definitely good, it’s how you grow and maybe make a different decision next time, but don’t wallow in irrationality for too long haha.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My fiance’s. Most of the time we are right on the same wavelength, but every now and then we have totally different views or approaches to a problem (even though we may form the same outcome).
I find it’s important to listen and gather a different viewpoint before finalizing my thoughts on anything. Sometimes my opinions change, sometimes they don’t — but I do feel that it is a complete loss if you have only looked at something from your own personal lense.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Building a network of people that I know I will still be working with in that time frame. We are all smaller entrepreneurs now, but if we keep growing our trades, learning new skills, and utilizing our strong partnerships as needed in each of our lines of work…we could build something amazing.
