Malori Maeva shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Malori, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I like to wake up around 6am and get a little workout in (I’ve gotten into weightlifting this year). I cook up some bacon and eggs then usually scroll social media while I eat. I love a longer morning and it’s often the only time of day I have to laze around so I relish these few pre-work hours. Then, I load up my little dog and we head to the studio.
I typically get to the studio around 9am and from there, the days get a lot less typical. If we’re in busy season, I touch base with my team and see what floral arrangements need to be done then we divide and conquer. Right now is our slow season so after I get through my inbox, I usually dive into a big side project (right now it’s revamping a members-only portion of our website).
When we wrap up at work, I head home and cook something for dinner. I’m single so I love getting to try out fun/funky recipes without having to please any other palettes. After dinner, I usually spend my evenings working on whatever knitting project is currently on my plate. To wrap my day up, I get in bed around 8pm so I can read for an hour or so before crashing and doing it all again the next day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Malori Maeva, I am the founder and creative director at Form Floral. We create floral arrangements inspired by art and we primarily create that work for weddings and corporate events. We love being the cherry-on-top of a beautiful event design.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I grew up with two brothers (middle child, here!) and my dad raised me the same way he raised them. I was always encouraged to be brave, assertive, and chase after my dreams. My dad was a business-owner my entire life and I knew from a really young age I wanted to follow in his footsteps. With my dad’s encouragement, I grew into a person who is confident, not afraid of failure, and able to keep my eyes on the big picture rather than getting dragged down in small things that may not have gone to plan.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
One million times. Post-COVID we experienced the wedding boom and opened a retail brick & mortar space at the same time. We were grossly understaffed, so much of the work fell onto my shoulders which led to severe burnout. It was the best we ever did financially as a company and it’s also worst I’ve ever felt physically/emotionally. When we got through the boom, I was completely spent and ready to throw in the towel. To be honest, the only reason we’re still here today is because weddings often book a year in advance and in order to close our doors, I would still have to honor those contracts. Knowing that even if I quit I wouldn’t be done for another 10-12 months kept me moving forward and I’m so glad I did.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The wedding and event industry loves to pretend like chaos is normal but I refuse to agree with this. While events/weddings are FULL of surprises, it’s our job as professionals to mitigate those as much as possible through prior planning, good communication, proper training, and organization. Event professionals who throw up their hands and say that the job is chaos no matter what are not going to build sustainable businesses and will often have many unhappy clients and vendor partners.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
This made me giggle because I would immediately sell the company and hit the road. Life is so short and we’re incredibly lucky to be here every single day that we open our eyes. The point of life is not work and if I knew I only had 10 years left, I’d spend that time with the people I love the most eating incredible food and traveling as much as possible.
I frame a lot of strategic business decisions with this mindset. How can I build a culture where my team is supported and secure but also where they have the time and space to live full/rich lives outside of Form? It’s our guiding light.
