An Inspired Chat with Kristopher Wilson of Phoenix

Kristopher Wilson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Kristopher , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Hey guys! Thanks for having me!
Well right now a normal day for me starts with waking up around 5 in the morning to get up and get ready to be at my job which I’ll work until 1:30pm. At 1:30 I clock out and head over to the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences for my classes 2pm-6pm. Afterwards if I have a session booked at school I’ll spend the evening in one of the studios at school working on personal music for my band, Blu Joy. Between 7-10pm I usually arrive home and hang out with my cats until I fall asleep. Then rinse and repeat every weekday.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Kristopher Wilson, a 24 year old songwriter/musician and Phoenix local that’s been playing around town for about 7 years. I am a soon to be college graduate in the field of audio engineering which I am hoping will help me create the best work I can for my personal releases and project “Blu Joy” as well as hopefully helping local bands and venues with their sound work. Blu Joy has been around since 2018 and was formed out of the songwriting that I had been doing throughout high school.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a crazy energetic child who loved to bang on pots and pans along to my favorite music. I have always been obsessed with music and love to spend all of my time involved with it. Either listening or playing, I have always loved learning new songs and techniques on different instruments.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say the classic – “things will get better”. It is so easy to think negatively and spiral downwards, especially in your youth. But what I have found growing up is that the more you believe in yourself, the more you can achieve. Just believe in yourself and what you’re doing or working on, and the good things will follow.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends would say that making good music is the thing that matters most to me. I like to make people laugh, or feel good. It makes me feel good. The way I feel when I listen to The Beatles is what I aspire or hope to make people feel when they listen to my music. I feel music should be an uplifting thing, even if the song may be sad. Music should be a positive, communal thing that we can all share and enjoy, and I am just passionate about trying to do the best I can do at adding my piece to that puzzle.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I feel that music is a deeply spiritual thing. Or you could say just creating art. And I feel that a lot of modern musicians come at music or the industry with the whole idea or point being having a million monthly listeners on a streaming service, or getting a million followers. Just extending their image over making something with substance. As well as I mentioned earlier with music being something that should be positive. I feel like if your whole goal is money or fame, the music you make will be disingenuous, which I feel is inherently negative. And unfortunately from my perspective it seems all I see is that negative side. Maybe it’s a side effect of social media or something, but a lot of modern music and the way the industry works now just doesn’t sit well with me.
