An Inspired Chat with Grace Koval of East Valley

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Grace Koval. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Grace, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Working with street, stray, and shelter dogs. Being a part of their journey is the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. Seeing a dog go from terrified to the most loving animal brings me so much joy. I firmly believe rescue dogs make the best pets. They are so thankful for being saved.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, my name is Grace Kovsl, and I’m the founder of The Watchdog Foundation. We’re a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to tackling the stray animal population here in Arizona. Our mission is to support local animal rescues and shelters by helping fund adoptions, medical care, and spay/neuter procedures. We also focus heavily on educating the public on responsible pet ownership.

My journey started back in 2023 when I kept finding myself in situations with lost, abused, or abandoned dogs. These experiences deeply affected me and I felt compelled to act. So, I started The Watchdog Foundation to focus on what we call the “invisible dogs”—the strays, the street dogs, and those that have been dumped. We believe these animals deserve a second chance, and that’s what makes our work so unique and urgent. We are dedicated to pulling them off the streets and placing them in the loving care they deserve.

We’re currently focused on raising funds for two very special dogs with extensive medical needs. It’s a huge undertaking, and we’re planning an upcoming raffle to help cover the costs. We’d be incredibly grateful if any local businesses would be willing to donate items or services for the raffle—it would make a huge difference in the lives of these animals.

Thank you for giving me this platform to share our story. We can’t do this work alone, and every bit of support helps us get one step closer to a no-kill Arizona.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My father, who was in the Marine Corps for 30 years, taught me discipline. From an early age, he instilled accountability, hard work, and integrity.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
In rescue, there were many times where I wanted to give up. We’ve dealt with scammers, an entire litter of puppies with Parvo, and a foster dog who needs two knee surgeries. However, no matter how hard the struggle, the feeing you get when you see one of our rescue dogs with their forever families makes it all worth it and keeps us going.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
A lot of people worry that fostering would be too hard, and I completely understand that feeling. I felt the exact same way at first, but what I’ve learned is that the heartbreak of saying goodbye is nothing compared to the immense joy of seeing a dog you’ve helped save find their forever home. Knowing you were a critical part of their journey from the streets to a loving family is one of the most amazing and fulfilling experiences.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Being at home, sitting on the couch, with my three dogs. They bring me so much joy and peace.
