We’re looking forward to introducing you to Bruce Dunbar . Check out our conversation below.
Bruce, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Currently I feel I am walking path, I have a vision and a purpose and work daily on my mission and my passion. Most of my life I wandered and was reactionary, bouncing from one thing to another with no thought to where it was leading.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I was in the restaurant industry most of my adult life and was pretty good at it. After my father became ill I retired to care for him and I eventually made my way to Arizona, rekindling an old flame and developing a love of donkeys in the process. With our business we are able to introduce clients to the joy they can receive from these wonderful creatures. Bringing the burros to weddings highlighting the best day of someone’s life is a special honor.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My partner Gretchen was the one who had the insight that I needed donkeys in my life. Her interest in horses sparked my desire to learn more about the benefits of being in contact with donkeys and horses
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me to take every moment as precious and that nothing comes easy or without effort, a price. Suffering makes the journey and the ultimately the success far sweeter and satisfying.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Smart people tend to rationalize or think they can think their way out of situations or problems. Often I find listening to my gut instincts or my spiritual side gives me the answers. I find staying true to myself and my values is ultimately satisfying and if I put in the work the results take care of themselves.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will see the arch of a lifetime culminating in my being a better, more complete human than when I started. I hope not to be judged on a single act, but a body of work that was always moving forward, learning from the past and trying to improve.
