An Inspired Chat with Brook Choulet M.D. of Scottsdale

Brook Choulet M.D. shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Brook, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think a lot of people quietly struggle with separating who they are from what they do. Especially high performers. It’s easy to tie your identity to your title, your sport, or your paycheck. When that changes, or even when you hit a big milestone, it can leave you feeling unsteady. I see it all the time. That’s why I always come back to this idea: your self-worth should come from within, not from external achievements.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dr. Brook Choulet, a concierge psychiatrist specializing in performance and sports psychiatry. Through my private practice, Choulet Performance Psychiatry®, I work with athletes, executives, and other high performers who want to strengthen their mental skills rather than only treat symptoms.

One of the projects I’m especially proud of right now is organizing mental health awareness games in partnership with professional sports teams. These events are helping shift the culture by making conversations about mental health more visible, relatable, and supported, from the sidelines to the boardroom.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
As a third-generation psychiatrist, I learned the most about work by watching my mother and grandfather. Through them, I saw what it meant to show up for people with focus, compassion, and consistency. Their legacy shaped my path, and I’m proud to carry on the tradition of helping individuals achieve exceptional mental health and performance.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Building something new early in my career wasn’t easy. There were moments when the responsibility of running a private practice, defining a new model of care, and delivering at a high level felt overwhelming. But I believed in the kind of psychiatry I wanted to practice, which is focused, personalized, and grounded in real connection. That clarity helped me stay the course. The most meaningful part has been watching patients unlock more of their potential and knowing I’ve been a steady presence in their growth.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Many high-achieving individuals still equate rest with weakness and vulnerability with failure. Even some of the most intelligent people believe that pushing harder and longer is always the answer. In reality, sustainable performance requires recovery, alignment, and self-awareness. Without those, even the smartest strategies fall short. My work focuses on helping people break free from that outdated mindset so they can perform with greater clarity and longevity.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I helped people lead fuller, more intentional lives by strengthening the connection between their mental health and their performance. I hope they say I saw their potential clearly, even when they couldn’t, and that I challenged them to rise to it with clarity, resilience, and purpose. My goal has always been to shift the narrative around mental health from symptom management to optimization. I want my work to stand as proof that high-achieving individuals and families can thrive under pressure without sacrificing well-being, and that elite care can be compassionate, strategic, and deeply human.
