We’re looking forward to introducing you to Amber Lovin. Check out our conversation below.
Amber, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: When was the last time you felt true joy?
When I woke up this morning next to my ‘project manager’ who is actually just my small dog, Cheese.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Amber Lovin, and I’m the human behind ‘Druid Silver’!
I’m a silversmith who works with all sorts of stones (and a pinch of magic) to hand-forge one of a kind, sterling silver jewelry. I caught the ‘silver bug’ about 2 years ago and have been utterly enthralled ever since. I decided to sell the jewelry I make so I could afford to continue the hobby (the cost of precious metals continues to rise) and along the way I also fell in love with the ‘selling’ side of things! Getting to see people feel excited about the jewelry I make, see them wear it, hear the stories behind the pieces they commission – AH! It fills my heart with warmth.
I decided to name my little business ‘Druid Silver’ because I really do feel like a little silver witch goblin, alchemizing metals and stones into talismans that make people feel powerful and beautiful.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My father. I’ve always been an artist: piano, music production, DJing, figure skating, writing, drawing, and now silversmithing – my father has always reminded me to ‘slow down’ and take my time while working. I have a bad habit of wanting to rush to the finish line, but he’s helped me learn that the best way to work and create, is to take it slow. Refine your skills, and enjoy the process.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh yes! When I first started learning to silversmith, I was SO cocky. I went into it thinking it was going to be easy, but very quickly found out I wasn’t going to be good at it as quickly as I thought. That was a really humbling moment for me, and this work continues to humble me every day. It turns out, being humbled is now one of my favorite parts of the smithing process!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
It’s really important to me to acknowledge the different cultures associated with silversmithing, particularly the Native American tribes whose land I get to call home – Arizona.
Native Americans and silversmithing are a married pair, and cannot be separated. It’s imperative to me that I remain mindful of their cultural jewelry styles, embellishing, symbolism, and businesses. If I’m asked to create a bolo tie, or use Native symbols, I politely decline and instead refer that person to various Native artists, and I always make it a priority to purchase my raw materials directly from Native American businesses whenever possible.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I think I’d like it if people said ‘she was a little odd, but in a good way’!
