Check out Megan Tennant’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Tennant.

Megan, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I consider myself a serious photo hobbyist with a passion for capturing authentic real-life moments. I specialize in natural light photography but do some studio work as well. I am in my element when I can be in full control of the creative process. I enjoy creating moody portraits with a boho or hipster flare. I have a variety of clients but find the most joy when working with families and children. As a full-time career, I work as a trauma therapist with children who have been victims of abuse. On the weekends I choose to work with families who reset my world view and remind me of the goodness that can be found when we pay close attention. Life is about balance, and I find mine while visiting the creative side of my brain. I am most content in life behind the lens of my Nikon.

I first became interested in photography about six years ago. I had a Nikon point and shoot at the time and felt a bit discouraged knowing I needed a DSLR. A friend of mine encouraged me to learn all I could about framing, composition, and post-production with the tools I had available. I was encouraged to take 10,000 photos before buying a “good” camera. I spent about two years working with that little camera and learning Lightroom and Photoshop techniques. The day I bought my DSLR was a proud moment, and I was glad I had not jumped in too quickly. I’m glad that I took the time to learn the craft and to ensure I would not grow weary of photography after investing money in equipment. I encourage anyone considering getting involved in photography to start now. Start where you are with what you have and grow from there. It’s a long process, but it will make your end game totally worth it!

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m the photographer for the families who crave something different than the norm. I would not classify my photography as traditional. I capture moody, warm family portraits with a hipster or boho flair. I do not do highly posed or staged photos. I like to preserve the moments that are most authentic to the family and give them a glimpse into the love that exists beneath the surface.

The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
I have built my art into the cracks of my life for years. My advice would be to do what you have to do while working toward what you want to do. Little by little things tend to fall into place and before you know it you’ve developed something pretty rad. Just remember it’s a chipping away process and it requires a spirit of diligence.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
