Life and Work with Madison Murray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Murray.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Before I became part of the fitness industry, I was a professional dancer for the NBA. I spent one season with the Utah Jazz and three seasons with the Phoenix Suns. I spent 20 years of my life dancing and obviously loved it. I never thought I would find something that could replace it and then I found fitness. I realized that I was not necessarily in love with dancing, but with movement. I always knew that dancing had an expiration date so I was ecstatic when I found something that could stay with me forever and that was movement and fitness. I love watching the body move, pushing it to its limits and seeing what it is capable of. After four seasons of dancing, I decided to take the leap and move into a career in the fitness industry. I was hired on as a trainer at a gym in Scottsdale called BODI. I have spent the last five years training at BODI and building my career as a trainer. During those five years, I also obtained multiple certifications one of which was nutrition. Because of this, MadFit was born. MadFit is my own business where training and nutrition becomes a lifestyle. I truly believe that in order to find your balance between health and happiness you have to make it a lifestyle.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t believe in smooth roads. 😉 I think if the path is too easy, you are probably on the wrong one. You need a road that will test your limits and challenge you. That is exactly what my path did for me. I wanted to quit at least once a week but my grit and determination to help others wouldn’t let me.

My advice for other women and young women who are just starting out is to JUST DO IT. 9/10 times I didn’t know what I was doing or how it would work but I just went for it. I believe that action creates momentum and you just have to start. Another piece of advice that I have is to trust that you are capable! The world is going to tell you all kinds of reasons why you aren’t cut out for this or why you aren’t good enough, ignore them and know that you can do hard things. YOU ARE CAPABLE OF ANYTHING.

Please tell us about MadFit & BODI.
I am a group fitness instructor/trainer at BODI.
Nutrition coach at BODI.
Manager at BODI.
Owner at MadFit.
Coach at MadFit.

At BODI, we specialize in High-intensity interval training with a focus on functional training.

At BODI, we believe that training and nutrition is a lifestyle and it is our mission to help you find your balance between health and happiness.

What sets me apart from others is that I am the trainer that is right there with you. I don’t want to be put on a pedestal like so many others do. I want you to be able to watch me in my fight and know that I am right there with you in yours.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I don’t think the barriers have anything to do with being male or female. I think barriers one would face in leadership has everything to do with personality, skill, character, and morals. I work at the gym entirely run by women and we kill it!
