Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Cordova Luna.
Marina, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My jewelry making journey began in the spring of 2016 out of a relentless passion to start my own business. This fire within me sparked because of my humble beginnings and wanting to make my parents proud. I always had a spark for the arts. I loved jewelry as it was a form of self-expression through colors and textures—it was mesmerizing. On a tranquil afternoon, through my galore of YouTube video tutorials on jewelry making, I came upon one that really caught my eye. It was a polymer clay tutorial on how to make peas in a pod. So random, right? I was instantly intrigued. I started to do more research on this art medium and realized how versatile it was. In that moment, I knew the sky was the limit to what I could create—I then decided I wanted to make earrings.
Polymer clay is an oven-baked medium that comes in an array of colors and also gives you the freedom to create your own explosion of colors, tones, textures, and combine it with other types of mixed media. Polymer clay has give my imagination no limitations on what I can make. If I could think it and dream it, I could craft it with my own hands. I immediately fell in love. I started making food and desert themed jewelry. Almost two years later, I have now incorporated artsy patterns, statement earrings, and necklaces with much more to come.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I make earrings out of polymer clay. It is a medium made of polymer and clay that when baked in an oven, it will harden. I absolutely love working with it as you can make just about anything your mind and heart desire. I want my art to evoke emotions of love, happiness, and laughter for anyone who has the ability to see or wear my jewelry. My mind is an explosion of colors, textures, and patterns. It is all about being colorful, playful, and fun! I want people to experience that through my work.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I think the role of an artist is to provoke emotion in people through our work. As an artist, we can make people dive deeper into themselves to better understand who they are and how as humans, we can make a difference in our world. For example, the message I portray is of loving one another regardless of our race, nationality, social class, etc. It should not make a difference. If we view the world from a loving perspective, our reality shifts to that of love. That is the biggest message and value I portray through my art. If everyone realized their potential and the difference we can make, the world would be a happier place.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I sell my work through my online shop www.lunaandsaya.com and at local pop-up shops in Tucson, AZ. I announce these on my social media–you can follow me @lunaandsaya on Instagram or on Facebook under ‘Luna and Saya’.
