Meet Beth and Nathaniel Zoneraich of Advanced Fertility Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth and Nathaniel Zoneraich.

Beth and Nathaniel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York and both of my parents were CPA’s and they owned an accounting practice and a small travel agency. For my undergraduate education, I went to Cornell University and studied Industrial & Labor Relations. After graduating, I took a job at First Manhattan Consulting Group in New York City, a boutique financial services consulting firm that focused on bank mergers, customer profitability within financial institutions. I worked with clients both domestically and internationally. It was in New York during this time when I met Nate Zoneraich, my husband of 21 years. We met in an old fashioned elevator, while going to the same party. Nate was in medical school at Cornell, but he also had attended Cornell University undergrad, so we had a lot of friends in common.

Nate was born in New York City, but grew up in New Jersey. His mom was an OB/GYN and he used to help her stock supplies and get ready for patients. His parents had emigrated from Romania in their twenties, and his mom was the first female OBGYN resident at New York Hospital.

After 2 years in New York, I moved to Boston to attend Harvard Business School to get my MBA. After Harvard, Nate and I got married and I moved to Cleveland where he was doing his 4 year OB/GYN residency at Case Western. I worked for McKinsey, a management consulting firm, in operations, strategy, financial services, and some pro bono work for the City of Cleveland on welfare reform. Following McKinsey, I spent time at National City Bank in strategy and managing bank branches. During his residency, he fell in love with fertility medicine, which required an additional 3 year fellowship after his residency.

In 1999, we left Cleveland and moved to Atlanta for my husband to complete his fellowship at Emory. Both of our kids were born in Atlanta, in 2000 and 2002. I changed industries and went to work for Home Depot. I worked in strategy for the CEO, Bob Nardelli, and was later the merchant in charge of the special order kitchen business worldwide, with revenue over $1 Billion. I grew this business focusing on our in-store experience, re-branding, and reducing cost through the supply chain. When Nate finished his residency, we moved to Washington DC for an opportunity for Nate to work at Washington Fertility Center. I stayed with Home Depot in DC and worked to help sell Home Depot products to the government (mainly Army & Navy). After a year in DC, I left Home Depot to try out being a stay at home mom, but quickly realized I needed more. When my husband was ready to start his own practice, I jumped in to create the business plan and find the funding.

After doing a study across the country to figure out the right city to open a fertility clinic, we moved in 2005 to Arizona to open Advanced Fertility Care, Arizona Advanced Reproductive Laboratories and Arizona Advanced Surgery Center.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with all new businesses, there have been many challenges along the way. Funding was an initial problem as the building costs kept rising during construction and we could not afford to borrow any more money. Right at the end of construction, our contractor went out of business and I had to step in as the general contractor to finish the project.

In the initial years, cash flow was tight and we had a lot of turnover in staff. We were new at running a small business and it took a few years to understand how to structure our organizations to best provide excellent patient care.

As our business grew, growth provided more struggles with not having enough staff and having it take a long time to get new employees trained. We have now upgraded our training, all HR systems and management structure.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Advanced Fertility Care – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Advanced Fertility Care is a fertility clinics that specializes in helping patients start or expand their family to experience the joy of parenthood. We offer each patient personalized attention, and patients see a doctor at every visit. This high level of physician care combined with our continuous investment in the latest laboratory technology results in very high pregnancy success rates. We frequently have patients fly in from around the world to seek out our care.

We offer the full array of fertility services, including IUI and IVF. Most of our patients that undergo IVF are now opting to biopsy their embryos to test them for genetic abnormalities. We also have an in-house donor egg bank, providing patient’s significant financial savings over having to use an agency as well as much higher quality and faster timing.

As a company, we are most proud of the thousands of babies (and parents) we have created. We are also proud that we serve any patient that is struggling to get pregnant.

What sets us apart from other clinics is our success rates, level of attention received by our physicians and our compassionate care.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our plans for the future are to continue to serve patients with the highest level of care. This strategy has resulted in continuous growth for our practice over the past 13 years, and we are excited to meet this demand. We also plan to implement all the new and latest technologies as they develop, so we know that the way we practice fertility medicine today will not be what we are doing in 5 years.
