Meet Rebekah de la Fontaine of De La Fontaine Photography in West Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah de la Fontaine.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rebekah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was a young teenager I got into special effects makeup and in order to showcase my skills, I would take photos on my flip phone. As I grew older, my mother gifted me a small and cheap point and shoot camera to take better quality photos of my makeup. Eventually, my passion for makeup slowly disappeared as I got more interested in the camera side of things. I would take photos of friends, my family, and my sister–just about anyone who would let me. As a graduation gift I got my first DSLR and I treated it like my baby. As the years went on I learned on my own about lighting, composition, and everything it takes to make a stunning photo. I started getting into taking photos of couples and fell in love with that side of photography; I fell in love with photographing love. As I saw myself getting better and better at taking photos I knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Confident in my photographic ability, I decided to make my passion my career! I slowly learned about networking, marketing, and all the little and big things it takes to make a successful wedding photography business. I learn and grow every single day and I’m so thankful to have a job that doesn’t feel like a job. I have a wonderful fiancé who supports me and a mother who saw something special in me when I was taking photos on a flip phone.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the thing that I’ve struggled with the most is my own insecurity. Running a business, especially a business focused on your artistic ability can be challenging. I quickly learned that comparing myself to others would get me nowhere and I had to get myself out of that funk. I got my first couple of clients and they were over the moon with what I delivered. They loved my fun and easy-going attitude when doing engagement sessions and weddings. I got outstanding reviews and realized that my couples were loving me and what I was putting out there. That instantly melted away any insecurity I had about my artistic ability and I was able to focus all my energy on my clients and running an epic business.

Please tell us about de la Fontaine Photography.
Today, de la Fontaine Photography specializes in engagement, elopement, and wedding photography. I’m proud of where I’ve gotten in such a short amount of time and my clients who I’ve become good friends with. I make it a point in my business to make the process as exciting and as pain free as possible, from that first meeting to delivering the final product. I want my clients to look at me as a friend, someone who listens, someone who cares, and someone to just have fun with! I also focus on a thing I like to call “candid posing”. I give my clients prompts, move them around, and make them laugh to get something that looks candid. But may have been very posed! That makes it easy for clients who want candid pictures, but also needs a photographer who is able to guide them on what to do with their face, their body, and their hands! I’m proud of starting a business that’s focused on the clients and making them look and feel good.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was a young girl my family and I went to the store to pick up groceries and a few household items. I wanted to go down the toy aisle “just to look”. When we scanned the toy aisle I saw the most amazing pink, dress-up box! I begged my mother for it, but because we grew up in poverty my mother said no. As a young child I was admittedly saddened from not being able to have what I wanted. Time went by and it was Christmas day and I saw that I had the biggest wrapped present of the year. The present was addressed from all four of my older brothers. I tore into that wrapping paper and saw pink! I realized my brothers had collectively saved up their allowance and bought me the big dress-up box. Being an emotional child I wept from the most intense feeling of love. It’s my favorite memory from childhood because it still puts a smile on my face to this day! I’m happy to have an absurd amount of siblings that love me dearly.
