Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Milam.
Hi Stephen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my journey with aquatics out of a genuine passion for the hobby. Like a lot of people, it began with a single tank and quickly turned into something much bigger. I became fascinated not just with keeping fish, but with understanding the entire ecosystem, water quality, nutrition, and the live foods like phytoplankton and copepods play a major role in building a thriving, healthy tank.
As I got deeper into the hobby, I realized there was a gap in access to high quality, locally sourced live foods and aquarium products. That’s when I decided to turn my passion into a business and founded Big Country Aquatics. What started as small scale culturing at home quickly grew as demand increased through word of mouth, social media, and connecting with other hobbyists.
From there, I focused on building a brand centered around quality, consistency, and transparency. Whether it’s live phytoplankton, copepods, or fish, my goal has always been to provide products I personally trust and use myself. I’ve also put a lot of emphasis on educating customers, helping them succeed in the hobby rather than just selling to them.
Today, Big Country Aquatics continues to grow, and I’m constantly working to expand what I offer while staying true to the original mission supporting hobbyists with reliable products and real knowledge. It’s been a rewarding journey turning something I love into something I can share with others every day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like most small businesses, especially ones built from the ground up, there have been a lot of challenges along the way.
In the beginning, one of the biggest struggles was simply learning and refining the process. Culturing live products like phytoplankton and copepods requires consistency, attention to detail, and patience. There were times where batches didn’t turn out the way I expected, and I had to figure out how to adjust and improve without cutting corners.
Another challenge was building trust and getting my name out there. Starting from scratch meant relying heavily on word of mouth, social media, and connecting directly with other hobbyists. It takes time to earn credibility, especially in a space where quality really matters.
Balancing growth has also been a learning experience. As demand increased, I had to figure out how to scale production while maintaining the same level of quality and care. That meant investing more time, resources, and constantly improving my setup and processes.
There have also been the everyday challenges that come with running a small business managing costs, pricing products fairly, and staying consistent even when things get tough.
But overall, those struggles have been a big part of what shaped the business. They’ve pushed me to get better, stay focused, and build something that I’m proud of.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Big Country Aquatics is built around one core idea—providing high-quality, reliable products for aquarium hobbyists while helping people truly succeed in the hobby.
We specialize in live aquarium foods like phytoplankton and copepods, along with carefully selected fish and aquatic products. A big focus for us is culturing our own live products, which allows us to control quality from start to finish instead of relying on mass produced sources. That hands-on approach is a big part of what we’re known for.
What really sets us apart is the combination of quality and education. We don’t just sell products, we take the time to help customers understand how to use them, how to care for their tanks, and how to get the best results. Whether someone is brand new or experienced, we want them to feel confident and supported.
Another thing that makes our brand different is consistency and transparency. We only offer products we personally trust and use ourselves, and we’re upfront about how everything is produced and handled. That builds long term trust, which is something we value more than quick sales.
Brand wise, what I’m most proud of is the reputation we’re building. It’s not just about selling, it’s about being known as a reliable source that hobbyists can come back to. Seeing repeat customers, positive feedback, and people recommending us to others is what really shows we’re doing things the right way.
At the end of the day, I want readers to know that Big Country Aquatics is more than just a business, it’s something built from real passion for the hobby. Our goal is to keep growing while staying true to that foundation and providing quality products, honest service, and helping people enjoy and succeed in aquatics.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For me, finding a mentor and building a network wasn’t about one big moment, it was about consistently showing up and being involved in the community.
One of the biggest things that’s worked well is simply reaching out and engaging with people who are already doing what you want to do. Whether it’s through social media, forums, or local connections, I’ve found that most people are willing to share knowledge if you’re genuine and respectful of their time. Asking thoughtful questions and actually applying what you learn goes a long way.
Another key piece is providing value, even when you’re just starting out. That can be as simple as sharing your own experiences, documenting your process, or helping others where you can. When people see that you’re serious and consistent, relationships start to build naturally.
I’ve also learned that mentorship doesn’t always look like one person formally guiding you. Sometimes it comes from multiple people, different conversations, different perspectives, and learning from others’ successes and mistakes.
Consistency has probably been the biggest factor for me. Posting updates, staying active, and being part of the conversation helps build credibility over time. That’s what turns connections into real opportunities.
My advice would be to stay genuine, be willing to learn, and don’t be afraid to reach out. The right people will notice the effort, and over time those connections can play a huge role in your growth.
