Life and Work with Marsha Lockwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marsha Lockwood.

Marsha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I learned to sew from my mom, who had a Singer treadle machine that I learned to sew my school clothes on when I was in junior high school. That was when fabric and patterns were more affordable than clothing. I would love to have the same type machine sitting in my home now. I only wish I had kept some of mom’s patterns from the 50’s and 60’s.

I love to sew, quilt and fashion anything with fabric. Sewing is my creative outlet. I like to say, I opened my Etsy shop in 2012 after retiring from an accounting position. I love the fabric. Etsy has been a great place to sell my creations. The internet opens a whole new world to independent shops.

My daughter inspired me with the majority of the fabrics I use, and my grandson inspired the guitar straps in my shop. He loves the skull, roses and tattoo.

I love a cute towel and oven mitt set in my kitchen and find an excuse to wear an apron if just to clean the house. Who says we can’t look good while being domestic. And many items sold in most stores can be very boring.

Please feel free to stop by my Facebook page and let me know what you think, facebook.com/SeamsToSew.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest struggle has been to use and understand the workings of the internet and social media. They are constantly changing and changing the rules. The beginning is a struggle but I try to hang in there and it has become easier.

I am enjoying being creative and no pressure of making a living now. I have my retirement and can use Seams to Sew to create and have fun.

Please tell us about Seams To Sew.
My most creative work is my aprons. I created the sweetheart apron pattern that I use.

I began covering guitar straps to make custom guitar straps for my grandson. I began selling those online and they have become the main staple of my sewing line.

I like to use Alexander Henry fabrics. I find their skulls and tattoo fabric intrigueing and find that they are a nice change for someone looking for something a bit edgy and different.

We all want something different in our lives, to have a bit of something different to use everyday can be inspiring and bring us all just a bit of happiness.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe that women can be ready for any opportunity that is available. I have never felt there was anything that I could not accomplish if I wanted to.
