Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Leon.
Hi Melissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My first job at age 16 was as a Bank Teller. At a very young age, I learned about my money and other people’s money. After college, I spent 16 years in Operations Finance at a large luxury hospitality company, where I learned first-hand how businesses grow and stumble with local events. I was fortunate to learn accounting methodology from the ground up and eventually lead some large global projects for the finance organization. As my knowledge grew and my passion for helping others developed, I knew I wanted to start my own business. My longtime friend and colleague and I started Two Sense Consulting to help small business owners make sense of how they spend time and money. COVID helped our business grow fast, as we helped many small businesses apply for government assistance programs, and we did this for free. As our business grew, so did our business concept and offerings. We are both mothers and have spouses who also have full-time careers; We know first-hand how many balls are in the air when trying to do “all the things”. As a spin-off to the business, I created the “efficiency B podcast” to discuss new ideas on living a bold and balanced life. Some of the topics we discuss are time management, organization, outsourcing, kids, health, and transformation stories. My passion for numbers and teaching financial literacy has contributed to much of my personal and business growth over the last two years. I look forward to helping many more small businesses this year.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building the business has been a blast, but it’s not been easy. My business partner and I both have kids and responsibilities. So, we decided to build our dream job while working our day jobs. I have three very active children and my partner, a toddler and a newborn. We had/have no spare time, but we knew we had an excellent opportunity to make something special. Fortunately, one of our biggest personal strengths (turned into a business offering) is time management. So, we grew our ‘side business’ into a company I am very proud of in a very short period. We have helped more than 30 companies over the last two years, have a significant listenership on a podcast, hired five people to help us, and have fantastic growth opportunities ahead of us over the next twelve months. Has any of it been easy? No way, but I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Two Sense Consulting?
Two Sense Consulting was created to help small business owners focus on their purpose and passion. We help business owners maximize the way they spend time and money. Many business owners want to understand their business financial reports but don’t know how to start. We have a great formula to help get them there. It begins with a business review and accounting clean-up. We go back to the start of the year and get things in order. Then over the next few months, we keep their accounting books up to date while teaching them how to read and understand their financial statements in monthly CFO calls. It’s been so wonderful to see small business owners learn and grow through this process – it’s what gets us most excited about the work we do – teaching financial literacy. We recently launched an online self-paced training program for new businesses that are not yet ready for accounting help but want to get a head start on learning how to be their own CFO. It’s been extremely popular; here is the link to learn more about it. https://twosenseconsulting.com/cfocourse/
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My grandparents had a doublewide trailer in the White Mountains of Arizona, a four-hour drive from where I grew up. We went there all the time as kids. My parents own it now. It is so much fun to take my kids; in fact, we are going there later this month to play in the snow! The best part is that it all looks and feels the same as when I was a kid.
