Hidden Gems: Meet Patrick Fuller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Fuller.

Hi Patrick, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was an athlete through high school and into college, and only discovered computers in college after I had a serious wrist injury.  I fell in love at first key stroke and was just amazed at how computers and the internet could be used. My very first “big boy” job was in a small technical consulting company focused on custom software development.  They slid a 400+ page book about the .NET framework and C# language across my desk and said, “read up, you start at a client on Monday”… I kid you not!  I spent the next 10 years honing my programming skills, analysis skills, and project management skills and loved every minute of it.  My passion and excitement for technology eventually shifted to business and after a few pain staking years of feeling alone and isolated to do the entrepreneur thing on my own I found a group of other entrepreneurs that changed my life.  The group is called Entrepreneurs Organization and is a worldwide organization with localized chapters all over.

In 2010, I started a professional services company focused on providing project management and application development expertise. As the CEO, I knew that focusing on optimizing profitability was important for the longevity of the business, so I developed a software application to make forecasting and scoping our projects much easier. With this new software in place, our profitability skyrocketed. What started out as a home-grown tool quickly evolved into a new product—and a new company! I knew we had a great solution for other professional services firms like ours, but we weren’t sure how to market it effectively. How do we explain the benefits of using business forecasting to people in a Facebook ad? How do we demonstrate how powerful—yet simple—this software is? These were the questions that plagued me. Then the answer became obvious: We needed to make a video that explained why we created this product. In other words, I needed to share my story. However, there was a small problem: Video strategy and production were foreign to me. But I decided to dive in deep and learn about both.  First, I created a video that explained my backstory.

Then, I produced a series of project management videos and product training videos to help people understand what it is that we built and how they could use it to improve profitability on their projects. People loved them. The best thing about this video project was that I had a total blast! I caught the bug for telling stories through video, and I made a decision to help others do the same. I didn’t know it at the time, but this evolution started to change my life in other ways as well.  I started to get “off the couch” so to speak and get back into being an athlete.  I joined a CrossFit gym (CrossFit box for the purists), found an amazing coach and continue to work at it every single day.  Now, helping business leaders and entrepreneurs tell their story has become a passion for me now.  In fact, I developed the Entrepreneur Series in which I interview other entrepreneurs in an attempt to challenge the belief about what entrepreneurship looks like. I’ve worked with a lot of people to help them share their unique stories and create great content.  Today I get to meet amazing people and learn about incredible businesses while creating customized video marketing strategies, educational content series and really fun commercials audiences love. I won’t lie, there are days where I sit back and laugh to myself… I can’t believe this is what I get to do every day!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning the business of entrepreneurship was difficult at first. I can’t say enough great things about the Entrepreneurs Organization, and the lessons I learned while I was there. Switching to a completely different industry was also difficult and I honestly don’t think I could have done it if I hadn’t set myself up for success financially and time wise. It takes a lot of time to learn new technology, new equipment, and how the industry works as a whole. I love to learn and when I’m focused on something the work disappears and I get into a mode where I just can’t consume enough information.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fuller Story?
I think it’s a very unique time when you think about video. On one hand everyone has a video camera in their pocket and they could make just about any video right now, yet on the other hand we know when we see a “good” video vs. all the other videos created and we want to not only stand out but create something that speaks to the quality of our product or service. We want our video to be unique. We want to work with someone we trust, something we feel will help us “look good” and make the scary part of being on camera easy and enjoyable. And, mostly we want it to be affordable. As someone who has been on the paying ending of video services, I have felt the pain. That’s why my process and approach is really different. My primary focus is on flat fee monthly recurring video. It starts with a lot of planning, and ends with a flat fee we can budget and as many videos as we can film in a given filming session. No more “how much is that going to cost” conversations, instead we can replace those anxious conversations with a full roadmap of content we can work with. It’s all uniquely design with you.

What are your plans for the future?
I will continue to develop my own video content teaching others how to do what I do. I also plan to write a second, much more in-depth book about video marketing and practical ways to really get the most out of your investment. One of the more exciting things I’m working toward right now is creating/pitching mini-documentary series about people-first non-profits. My hope is to get a couple of corporate sponsors to really allow me to tell a deep, emotional, and compelling story that will lead to more awareness and support for these non-profit organizations.
