Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronnie Doss.
Ronnie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started in the personal development and transformation arena 11 years ago when I met a mentor that would change the direction of my life. I grew up in Mt. Airy, NC which is the same town Andy Griffith was born in. Literally, Mayberry from the Andy Griffith show. My father was a brick mason and my mother was an office manager. I attended North Surry High School and went on to NC State University. After leaving college, I moved to Atlanta, GA, where I would meet my wife Jennifer. We have been together for 16 years and have two daughters named Addison and Kennedy.
Back while living in Atlanta, I had an accident where I broke both of my wrists and was required to have extensive surgery. My mother and step-father came to Atlanta from NC to be with me during the surgery. After the surgery was over, my step-father left Atlanta to return to NC. He quickly fell ill and died only a few days after. Speaking at his funeral in Winston Salem, NC in front of hundreds of people with casts on both of my arms, I made a decision that I wanted to make a bigger difference in the world. At the time of the accident and his untimely death, I was in the real estate industry. I enjoyed it but knew it wasn’t my purpose. After emailing the pastor of a church my wife and I attended in Atlanta and sharing information about the accident and losing my step-father, the pastor asked to meet with me. We met, had lunch and that started a great friendship.
Not too many months after, he asked me to speak at the church he pastored. I did, and it was after the church service I met a gentleman that invited me to a leadership seminar that would be coming to town. I attended the weekend seminar a few weeks later. At the conclusion of the seminar, the facilitator asked my wife and I to go to dinner with him. We talked a lot and then told me he wanted to introduce me to the owner of the seminar company that put on the event. He made the connection and the rest is history for me. Mr. Brian Klemmer called me, asked me to work with him, and flew me to California to begin the journey.
Within two years, I would lead hundreds of leadership training events for his company in three different countries. After working with and being mentored by Mr. Klemmer, he suddenly passed away due to a heart attack. One year later, I left the company and started my own. Since then I have been asked to train teams at American Express, AT&T, the United States Air Force, the Mars Corporation and NASA. I have led training for participants in eleven different countries and authored two books. I host a weekly leadership podcast titled “Like A Doss” and coach over 50 business teams nationwide each month using live streaming video. My company now provides leadership seminars in the Phoenix and Seattle areas on a regular basis.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, there have been many hurdles that had to be crossed including the loss of both my step-father and mentor within just a few years. The financial challenges that came with starting a business from scratch and keeping my marriage and relationship with my children in a very healthy space have taken lots of work. To get to the place where we live now, my wife and I moved to five different cities. Being on thousands of flights and being away from home so often made staying mentally and physically healthy difficult at times.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
My company is called Ronnie Doss Enterprises. We specialize in the transformation and personal growth of teams and individuals. We work with Fortune 100 companies, large corporations, government agencies, universities, small businesses, as well as NASA helping them to produce better results and develop their teams better.
Our seminars also are open to the public and can be attended by anyone who would like to move their life forward. Absolute honesty, vulnerability, and transparency are what makes our training work. When our training work, the company works. We care more about people than simply what people can do for us. We call it serving well.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Authenticity is the key to our success. Relationships are the key to life and business so I have always made building healthy relationships a top priority. Pushing people in a very compassionate and caring way is what has helped us to be asked to speak to hundreds of thousands of people over the last decade from all backgrounds and beliefs. The willingness to be authentic and recognize that no matter who may be speaking, leading, or managing, everyone on the planet deserves respect. When people feel that you genuinely care for them, they will allow you to work with them in ways that other people may not get the chance. It’s a chance to change someone’s life.
