Meet Tino Cochino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tino Cochino.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tino. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my radio internship at the age of thirteen in my hometown of Lubbock, TX. I’m not quite sure what it was originally about radio that intrigued me but my grandmother took a quick notice and never looked back. She would drive me to every live broadcast the station had until they decided “if he’s gonna be around this much, he’s gonna work.”

Now, at 32, my team and I broadcast locally on 104.7 Kiss FM weeknights from 8P-Midnight. We have an amazing partnership with iHeart Media. Not to mention, I own the “Tino Cochino Radio” network which is independently syndicated to over 50+ cities across the country. Our show even airs in two of the nation’s top five markets, Los Angeles and Dallas. We’re also the first show to be syndicated in major markets that we’re not based in. I’m proud of that. It shows that you can make it to the top on your own terms.

My crew is phenomenal. Raquel is the definition of an independent, strong woman. Outside of radio. She does fitness training and still, binge watches “Friends.” Nicasio is without a doubt… ”unfiltered” but every show needs a bad guy. Lol! He’s also a DJ for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Our newest addition is our Producer, Alexis With Athens Good Hair. He’s young, focused and has a work ethic that I haven’t seen from someone his age since myself. He’s the glue and without a doubt my right-hand man.

Has it been a smooth road?
Every success story has struggles. Radio is a tough industry. You have to leave your closest family and friends in order to move city to city and build your career. You also have to be transparent and live your life via the airwaves, not everyone is willing or can understand that. Music can literally be found anywhere. For us, it’s what happens between the music. On top of that, the audience can tell what’s genuine and what’s forced. In a recent conversation, a peer of mind said something that will forever stick with me…. ”perception doesn’t pay your bills.”

Upon signing the deal with our syndicator, one of our key players backed out of the show. It was the worst possible time for it to happen but when someone doesn’t want to be with you, why fight it? You’re simply gonna drag on something that’s clearly over. About six months in, another key player left. Our syndicator could’ve easily backed out after realizing the show they were partnering with was no longer that same show. I thank god that they believed in my vision and allowed me to rebuild it. They stuck by my side and we are now stronger than ever. Our current weekly audience is 4.1 million listeners.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Our show is known for not only building a personal relationship with our audience but it’s known for fun. We have a great time! We want to do our part to make anyone going through a tough patch forget about that negativity and feel positive. We recently launched “I Did It” an initiative to celebrate personal wins. No accomplishment too big or too small. #ididitTCR

We’re also recognized for our original social media content. We make over 300 engaging videos specifically for social media every year! Some character-based, other celebrity-based. We love to bring these superstars into our world and get a different glimpse of them and their lives.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think our story shows that Phoenix is an amazing city for radio. There are a ton of talented personalities and shows out here. In my honest opinion, my CAREER didn’t start until I moved to Phoenix. This is the city where I’ve made a true connection with listeners. This is the city that designed our show and brand. This is the city that I met my fiancé and call home. The community supports FM radio in a major way and I’m honored to be one of the faces/voices to receive recognition.
