Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Proudfit.
Becky, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Buffalo New York. While attending University at Buffalo I was recruited for an internship with the Walt Disney Company in Florida. I worked for Disney in the entertainment division where I learned a lot about the dichotomy of happiness. There were a lot of people who were discontent working in a dream scenario. I realized if I couldn’t be overjoyed having this amazing experience working for the pinnacle of media, then I couldn’t be happy anywhere. I learned that happiness is first and foremost a choice you make. I took that lesson with me as I moved out west and began our family.
As a stay at home mom to four young kids, life was hectic and as I threw myself into being the best mom for these little humans I could be I got out of balance. I felt lost because I hadn’t made time (or made the best use of) time to become reacquainted with who I was. I pushed it aside until a major trial made me stop dead in my tracks and reevaluate everything.
In November 2017 I was unexpectedly diagnosed with cervical cancer. My world stood still and as I went through chemo and radiation to save my life things began to come into focus for me. I was shown the strength that was inside of me all along. I saw the things in my life that were crucial and the things that no longer mattered to me. I knew I was given this experience to help me grow and then to help others.
After I finished cancer treatment I was approached by a good friend, the documenting guru Becky Higgins, and asked if I would be interested in partnering with her in a project that we both quickly realized was something we needed to do and we needed to do it together. The Cultivate A Good Life Podcast was launched in October of 2018 and the first 12 months, we had over 785,000 listens and are almost at the one million listens to mark!
We are now helping women all over the world through the podcast, retreats, online classes and social media to gain the skills they need to have ownership over their lives.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not. The work is a grueling test in self awareness, self love, personal growth and courage. It is a little like standing naked in the middle of Disneyland at times. Transitioning to being a working mom has been a shift because it isn’t natural for me to make myself a priority. I am very lucky to have a supportive family who is so proud of the work that I do. Since cancer, my health comes before everything else. Taking care of and loving this beautiful and strong body is a daily event.
Because we are so vulnerable in the podcast, it’s a deep dive into my soul. I think some people who know me in real life are getting to know me in a completely different way on the podcast.
Please tell us about your work.
Being part of a brand like the Becky Higgins brand is an honor. With Becky’s 25 year career in the memory keeping industry, I have learned so much about the power of documenting. It helps us honor our past, be more present in our lives and empowers us to take control of our future.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I feel like there have been a lot of amazing moments. Interviewing personal here, being mentored by someone like Becky Higgins, traveling and learning from the best in the business, but the thing I am the proudest of is the change this work has brought to my life. It has helped me remember who I am and what I am here to do. I have more peace and happiness in my life because I am working every day to move forward in the best way possible in my life.
A highlight was the retreat we held for our listeners at Movara Fitness Retreat. We have a ton of professional images we can share. It was so powerful to bring amazing women together from all over the country and Canada to invest in personal progress. Doing it while conquering massive physical accomplishments was personally and professionally profound. We ended on my two year cancer diagnosis anniversary on the summit of a mountain in southern Utah. It was incredible.
